OK, buttholes aside, I have a serious question.

I have a nephew that has been living with a couple roommates that decided to be assholes for whatever reason and bail on the place they are living.

He’s a young adult.. He asked if he can move in to the spare room for a couple months until he gets another place. I told him yes.

How should I handle this?

We told him he can stay for a couple months, as he asked, to save up for a new place. But what if he doesn’t leave?

What if he gets comfortable? What happens after two months?

If he’s still here? Do I charge him rent? And if so, how much?

I wouldn’t put him on the street. I’m taking him in because he’d rather be here than with his Mom.

But stil…

Should I be charging rent?

I don’t need the money. I just want to do the right thing for him.

🤷‍♂️
Communications is the key.

Whatever you do (let him stay for free, pay rent, or something in between), you should make sure you lay it out so he knows the expectations up front. You don't want to be changing the "rules" later without a very good reason as that will lead to animosity between you.

If talk and come to a compromise on what the expectations are and follow them, it should work out.

Also, realize things can change for him. If he knows he has to start paying rent in a couple months but suddenly loses his job or has an unexpected financial loss, then you revisit the situation, talk it over, and adjust the expectations. I mean, you can't be an a$$hole. You got to have some empathy. He is family.

👍🍺 I almost had the same thing a few months ago with my brother - I was going to ask him for $100 a month. Not enough ‘rent’, but enough to make him think about the transaction. But, he found a place before any of that happened, so good luck…..

I love how the guy doing the video is smoking a cigarette at the gas station. :duh:
Great point. I didn't even notice. Idiots all around in that video.

The only thing coming to mind for me watching this was, why didn't one of the cop pull out a taser and shoot this SOB who was filming. The guy wouldn't shut the hell up. :ROFLMAO:

Charge him half of what rent would be and put it aside and give it to him when he goes to get his own place.
