It's just common sense.

Selling your goods here, the largest marlet on earth, is a privilege not a right.

The cost of doing business here then, is you must pay a tariff.

Simple.

wait you still haven't learned who pays the tariff?

I thought people finally understood this months ago.

we are soooooo cooked.

Here's a history lesson for all you tariffs experts:

Tariffs have historically provided significant benefits to the United States, particularly in its early development and industrialization. Here are key arguments detailing their advantages:

Revenue Generation

  • From the nation's founding until the Civil War, tariffs were the primary source of federal revenue, accounting for over 90% of income. The Tariff Act of 1789 helped fund government expenses and repay Revolutionary War debts26.

Industrial Protection

  • Tariffs shielded emerging industries from foreign competition, fostering domestic production. For example, high tariffs on steel in the late 19th century allowed U.S. mills to grow and eventually outperform British competitors, turning the U.S. into a global steel exporter6.
  • During the Industrial Revolution, tariffs supported infant industries like textiles and machinery manufacturing, enabling them to develop and compete globally6.

Economic Growth and Job Creation

  • Tariffs have been shown to stimulate domestic manufacturing and create jobs by incentivizing companies to produce goods locally rather than rely on imports. Recent studies found that Trump-era tariffs led to significant reshoring in sectors like steel and aluminum17.

Strategic Leverage

  • Historically, tariffs were used as a tool for negotiating trade agreements. For instance, Trump’s tariffs played a role in securing deals like the USMCA and Phase One China agreement by applying pressure on trading partners36.

National Security

  • Tariffs have been employed to protect industries critical to national security, such as steel production during wartime. They ensured self-sufficiency in essential materials during conflicts like World War I56

well, no shit Sherlock anyone can copy and paste history. there was a time when the tariff trade was more significant and workable but as the world shrunk and free trade prospered a lot of the things that worked in the 1800s and 1900s are no longer true today.

far too many new routes via trade for these ridiculous board tariff approaches to work. it needs to be much more specific and measured.

Americans will pay for these tariffs. Period

We see higher prices, but the benefit is more manufacturing jobs, protection of critical industries, job growth, investment in the US.

THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE.

this just isn't true

companies will pass along the cost to the consumer. it will still be too expensive to the vast majority of manufactures to move back into the U.S.

America tax payers will be on the hook for this mess

How do you figure this?

Companies are already in the process of moving back to the US.

Apple is investing $500 billion.

Honda building new plants here.

lies about ole Omaha warren

April 4 (Reuters) - Berkshire Hathaway (BRKa.N), opens new tab said on Friday that reports on social media regarding comments allegedly made by its chairman are "false," after Donald Trump's account on Truth Social shared a video suggesting that Warren Buffett endorsed the U.S. president's economic policies.

Tariffs, in Buffett's estimation, speak loudly and clumsily. They broadcast insecurity rather than strength.

"The irony," Buffett notes, "is that protectionism often harms precisely what it claims to protect. American consumers pay higher prices. American manufacturers face higher input costs. American farmers lose export markets. As Will Rogers would say, 'We’re the first nation in the world to go to the poorhouse in an automobile.' "

If Buffet believes this, then that's pretty fucking stupid. Which means he doesn't really believe it.

My guess is he's against tariffs to protect his investments.

Don't believe a word of that bullshit.
