IMHO just focus on getting a 500lb deadlift. Once you get over 30 being strong at a reasonable bodyweight is the best thing you can do. Running beats the crap out of your body and I get that some people love it for the mental and emotional benefits but physically it will catch up to you.
i ran a lot on top of my martial arts training all throughout my childhood and my knees now are no bueno

I've already started to transition to other forms of cross training in terms of cardio. I've picked up swimming, some elliptical in addition to running. It's just too much impact if I pound every day.

I was a decently competitive distance runner/marathoner from about 20-25 years old. It takes A LOT out of you. I'm nowhere near competitive anymore

I enjoy running a lot, so I want it to stay in my life. But I know I can't get after it like I used to. Runs like yesterday are more the exception, not the norm. And I am fine with that. I'm a healthier weight, put on a bit of muscle, play basketball, lift weights.

That 11 mile run would have been a lighter day when I was like 23. I have no desire to go back to that kind of lifestyle.

I guess I forgot to mention back earlier in the thread:

I weighed 170-185 max in high school, and am in the 170s now (I'm 6'1, 6'2 in basketball shoes ;) )

But when I really was competitive in running it was 150s. Just not healthy for my frame.

I like having muscles
Walking and swimming are excellent but be careful with the elliptical it is an unnatural movement and is too repetitive. Don't worry about having muscles worry about getting stronger. " Ask honestly the last woman you have been with what matters more looks or performance?"- Jim Wendler

A few years ago before I started working out I found myself in front of a chin up bar and was embarrassed that I couldn't do one. Today at the gym the lat pulldown machines were all busy, so I attempted my first chin up since then. I got 7 good reps in and could probably have squeezed out 1 more, but didn't want to burn myself out on my first exercise. 7 chin ups is nothing to brag about, but it's proof that hard work at the gym pays off. In a few months I'll check again and see if I've made any more progress.
GL at the gym and elsewhere this week everyone.

Funny when you go to the gym you will always see the big guys on the lat pull down and the skinny guys on the chin up bar if they actually wanted to get stronger they would switch.
