When I need work done on one of our rent houses in South Texas, I go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up migrants who are waiting for work. Most have their own hand tools if its carpentry work.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. I'm supporting the influx of illegals. But, when you can't find anyone else to do it, you gotta do what you gotta do. And, these guys, bust a$$. I mean, you tell them what you want done and it gets done fast and exactly how you want.

You always buy them lunch, provide lots of water, some shade, and turn them loose.
I always tip these guys because I've never been disappointed in their work.

This is what gets overlooked so often by the "anti-immigrant" truthers. Illegal or not these people aren't coming here if work isn't available. The fact is the majority of them are hard working people just trying to make a better living like most people around the world. And they do so many jobs that American workers simply refuse to do mostly because of low pay rates.

I have hired these guys a ton of times to do little jobs here and there and in all these years never had a single problem. I have a lot of respect for them they are some of the hardest workers u can find.

You take these people completely out of the work loop and the economy takes a massive hit.

Complete BS why don't you go move to their countries since they are so great remarkable hard working people? You know deep down it is wrong and are just trying to justify your behavior 👎

So what do you do edawg?
You pay the going rate for locals to do the work? If so, you're getting robbed.

In the past, when I needed some work done, I'd call several local contractors and all of them would say, "We can't get to it for 2-3 months" and they will charge you 20X the actual costs since they know no one else will do the work.

I'm not here to make these contractor companies rich off my dime. Screw them.

I've asked 10 contractors to pour a replacement driveway. 8 said, no thanks. Too much work. We don't need the job. The other two were going to charge me at least 5x what it should cost. I hired one of them and paid $8k downpayment. Guess what? The POS never showed up, won't answer calls, yet is still out there doing other jobs. I had to take him to small claims court and still don't have my money back.

Would you support contractors like that because that is all we have available.

That is the point you don't give a fukk about middle class American workers but always are the first to complain and bitch. The thing is if you really wanted to save money how about reading a book and doing the work yourself. Please stop with the internet tough guy act that is another problem wrong with this society.

If honestly that is all you have available then that's a problem. Did you call the city and ask if they had any contractors they would recommend? Were they union contractors that took your money and never showed up? People want to make top dollar and benefits for what they do but don't want to pay it to anybody else.

My business was crawfish ponds. Years before me it was fine with no problems with local workers but nowadays Americans for the most part don't want to do this type of work, too many hours, too damn hot, and they can simply make much easier money today.

So I used the guys who were willing to do the work and do it well. Can make all the racist and elitist assumptions possible but facts are facts. Years of employing those guys and never a problem. They showed up every day with a smile and some good laughs.

Why not hire the people who deserve to be hired no matter who they are? I can't just hate to hate

The only thing I would add to your point is that it’s crucial to be more specific about WHICH illegals

There’s a huge difference depending on what part of the world they come from and which ones are beneficial to society, compared to which ones only bring burdens & chaos

The only craft people that are union in the area of my rent houses are the electricians.

I only use SKILLED CRAFTSMAN when it comes to plumbling and electrical. People can really screw things up in a large way if you mess those utlities up. I pay $200/hr for plumber and $150/hr for electricians with the companies I hire. That's the going rate locally. I realize the the craftsman are likely only getting 1/2 of that while the contracting company is getting rich.

But, if there is lower-skilled manual labor to be done, digging, landscaping, fence, minor carpentry I will attempt to hire a contractor but as I've stated, I usually have no options but to head to Home Depot/Lowes to find workers.

My last two big projects where I did hire local contractors (replace roof, build cedar fence), I had to pay an exhorbitant amount to get it done..... Guess what. The workers the local company I hired used immigrants for the work, except the foreman. Even when you try to use local labor, it doesn't work.

yeah, I do not agree with that. people are people no matter where they come from there are some good and some bad. so I think you have to decide on an individual basis. hell, America is no different plenty of shitty people born and raised right here.

I think the ones that are more into the crime are not likely to want to do hard work (i.e. manual labor).

I don't just hate to hate your business is your business if honestly nobody is willing to work for a living wage then I get it but it is a very slippery slope to think your doing right by paying a lesser wage to immigrants and think your benefiting anybody but yourself in the long run. If anything you want to bring the immigrants into the American middle class with good paying jobs and benefits.

How do you resolve this issue in the US?

Younger generations don't want to get into the crafts especially jobs with manual labor no matter what the pay is. This leads to shortages and who is willing to fill the gap? --> immigrants.

How do you stop the cycle? How do you get Americans to be willing to do those crap jobs?
You'll never be willing to pay people $50/hr to dig holes. So what's the answer?

I never paid them a lesser wage even though I probably could have. I paid the same pay I did to the local guys because it was very fair for the work. The problem was they could simply make money doing easier work and hell I don't think you can blame them or that.

If you can get easier work for the money then by all means do it. Makes your life better I can't be mad at em for that. But for the other guys, it was just a blessing that they even had a job and that it paid which for them was beyond well, that they came with a smile and ready to go every day all day.

There is no good answer. Times are changing these new generations know how to work smarter not harder and with so much money in the online world, they simply don't have to take these manual labor jobs.

That trend is currently growing and will continue to.

I might come off a bit abrasive but that is because I have been union and arguing for middle class union labor my whole life. Everything that is put out is that union people are lazy and selfish but I have seen the exact opposite.
In fact the most financially successful people that I know have all been union contractors. Would never tell another man or woman how to live their life or spend their money but to just make sure at the end of the day that you are helping people and not taking advantage of them.

I couldn't agree more and have always been pro-Union they have done great things for working people and hopefully continue to for years to come and union workers are a core of the country. The benefits far outweigh the negatives. And I am def not the leave the border wide open and let everyone in guy either, there is a problem and there needs to be a workable fix.

I would hire local American workers 100/100 times given the chance. Helping local people is fundamental to the community. But things are changing and adapting isn't easy so sometimes you have to take what u can get or well put your business at risk. Sadly

And I hate the blind idea that these people are somehow worse or unworthy because of their situation. Shit making a living and getting by isn't easy for anyone so I refuse to not help someone simply because of where they may be from or how they got here.

Edawg, unions made this country. I've worked as a manager in union and non-union plants and can guarantee you, the union guys help keep EVERYONE's wages/benefits fair so companies don't screw them over.

Although I was in management, 99% of the time I took the union side. After being on the contract negotiations team for the company one year, I think they realized that and I never got to do it again.:ROFLMAO:
