Seriously - the trouble I have finding people to do even simple jobs is ridiculous.

Got what is probably a truckload and a half of stuff at the old place that needs to go to Goodwill. Pre Covid goodwill would come and take it - no problem. But now they won’t even send a truck - you have to bring it to them.

So post it on local marketplace - offer $150 to haul it to goodwill or wherever. Hell - take it and have your own yard sale first at your place and make a little extra for all I care - just want it gone.

First guy is nearby and actually know the parents - can’t do it till Tuesday - no prob. Ask how I’m paying - tell them I can send via app or just drop them a check in mail today (should be there Wednesday) - no, wants paid cash now to work on Tuesday - next.

Next kid can do it immediately and is fine with payment - but wants me there as he won’t go in a house alone. Well - it’s not a house, it’s a garage and it’s literally empty except for this junk. Wants me to drive 2 hours each way to meet him now - if I’m doing that - I’m just doing the damn job myself and saving $150 - the point of hiring is to save my time and gas driving down - next.

On to number 3 now - can do it tomorrow he thinks. Supposed to check it out and get back to me.

It’s $150 for an hour - hour and a half max of light labor and driving 9 miles total with a truck. I thought that’s pretty damn fair. Lazy ass people I swear.

When I need work done on one of our rent houses in South Texas, I go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up migrants who are waiting for work. Most have their own hand tools if its carpentry work.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. I'm supporting the influx of illegals. But, when you can't find anyone else to do it, you gotta do what you gotta do. And, these guys, bust a$$. I mean, you tell them what you want done and it gets done fast and exactly how you want.

You always buy them lunch, provide lots of water, some shade, and turn them loose.
I always tip these guys because I've never been disappointed in their work.

1st guy - payment 1st before work? no bueno.
2nd guy - too afraid and honest (maybe).
Hopefully, the 3rd guy will fulfill the work for you, DJ.

Same here, Tank.

The Ticos always complaints about Nicaraguans taking all the jobs, but yeah, it's only because not a lot from the locals wants to do the job, especially for the hard labors.

Exactly. Its especially tough when you're moving dirt.
Locals will say "I'll have to bring in some heavy equipment to do it" and charge you thousands for the rental.

These migrants will do it by hand with shovels for hundreds.
I realize it sounds like I'm taking advantage of these people but, they can say no and I pay them well.

Best carpenter I ever hired was a guy from Lowes. He used my power tools but that guy could build anything. I'm guessing some builder hired him permanently because he wasn't there the last time I went.

You're just being resourceful and you're paying them well and even giving them food. I will do the same if I am in your position, Tank.

I’ve been around a lot of those type of workers handiwork - being fair - there is literally nothing they cannot do - or that they will say they cannot do at least. Ask them do you know how to install a roof - they are going to tell you they were a roofer back in there home country - ask them have they ever performed an appendectomy- your likely to find out they were a surgeon prior to coming here.

For basic rough framing/handy man type jobs - you’re fine - landscaping too - it doesn’t need to be exact - just look good and they are not afraid to work.

But yea - these damn kids are beyond useless. Worst one was getting someone to clear the buildings out. It was a bigger job - just a lot of junk that needed cleared - probably a solid 10 hours of work there - took the guy I hired 2 weeks and multiple calls/messages reminding him the job needed to be done ASAP. Worst part - he lied about being finished - I paid him like a sap and came down to see he had done about half. Fortunately I got him to finish - but last time I use him…he name dropped an old friend who vouched for him or never would have paid without inspecting first.

Seriously looking forward to dumping this place - never thought I’d say that of the old homestead.

The funny part to me about all this - started a scrap pile out by one of the buildings from all the junk I had cleaned up - was just going to give it to the guy who I rented a dumpster from since he gave me a break on pricing. I mean scrap isn’t big $$ - but easily can pull in $100-200 for a trailer load. I have gotten at least 4 calls asking “can I have it” - people do I’ll take it for free to haul to make $150 - but offer them $150 for a like amount of work and they act like it’s too big of a hassle for too small a payout.

Cmon in boys - I don’t live there and buyers are being beyond difficult.

Seriously - giving some of these boys a bit too much credit thinking they would come back to rob a place. That’s more along the mindset of some white trash meth head thinking.

Reminds me of one the body techs at a place I used to work.

Guy was always bringing in “side work” oil changes/brakes - light mechanic stuff - owner didn’t care if guys worked on stuff in their spare time so long as it wasn’t body and competing with his shop.

Anyway - this guy did it way more than anyone else. Lots of guys did their personal cars/friends and family weekends/after hours - but this guy was doing it all day.

Finally asked him one day how much he was doing and how much he made - he got to bragging he was making 500-600 a week. Told him that was pretty good - but had a way he could make a grand extra a week…looked at me and said how. Simple - FIX THE DAMN CARS FROM BODY. He was spending 25 hours a week on the side work…the entire time the shop was trying to find an extra tech and giving other techs extra hours because he was always tied up on projects. Easily could squeeze an extra 30-35 in billable hours in his schedule by skipping the side gig and just doing his damn job - but side jobs paid cash same day and body was paid weekly and taxed…in his mind he was “profiting” doing this low paying crap work.

Of course make your money and fukk everybody else is your thinking? Maybe you wouldn't have as many problems if you put people in front of making money. Sorta funny how those things work out.

And the Republicans hire their workers from the home depot parking lot. Don't fool yourself they have more in common than you think.

How exactly am I making money here ? Please - enlighten me as to where you see me MAKING money at in this scenario - as it’s all outgoing.

The sale of the house ?? The one that I’m spending a fair amount on after the agreement was made because the buyer keeps raising stupid request AFTER signing the contract - yea, no there is no money being made there. I am simply selling the residence part of the property as it’s a money pit and recouping what I lost the last 6 years renting it and trying to be a decent person helping locals caught in the housing crunch of few available rentals and skyrocketing prices. Of course all that got me was a ton of white trash who feel that rent payments were optional.

Like I have said before - the entire experience is actually quite depressing. Took something that has been part of my family for several generations and that I sought to keep in the family and made me want nothing to do with it. People absolutely trash - with a large percentage either looking for hand outs or to screw your eyeballs out - thinking your ignorant of the value of things. On a positive - now that the house is split off - I’m able to then recover my loss from the last 6 years and simply donate the land to be kept in a conservation/woodland - ensuring no further development occurs.

I have no issues with someone making money - but if you think I’m simply grabbing as much cash as possible and screwing some hard working citizen here - you really need to look again. The issue is entirely the socialization of our workforce. There is no incentive to work when you can simply set back and be cared for without participating in the workforce. Social programs are wonderful when they provide a fall back to those unable to participate - but when they are an alternative to participation you begin to develop real issues with your economy. And it’s not a Republican v Democrat or Trump v everyone thing here. All parties have had their day in power - none have came close to solving the issue.
