Seems EXTREMELY stupid now, but we would get fishing line, stretch it across the street (of our residential 25mph street, mind you), tie each end off to a metal (yes, we had metal) handle of a galvanized trash can on each side of the street. A car hits the fishing line, trash cans ‘CLANK!’ behind the car, and the hilarity ensued…..

And hoping a bike didn't come by....

+1. Street football two hand tag with all time QB.
Absolutely. Me and a couple of buddies still talk about what has become over the years knows as “Melody Street Football.”

Banging off parked cars to try and make a catch. Pausing the game for traffic. Etc. Remember it well

Played it all summer. Two of my best friends lived across the street on the road we played on

Always started off two hand touch then turned into the most violent games ever 😃
Yeah we played tackle on the fields as well and also kill the man with the ball. One poor kid from the neighborhood would always get hit the hardest and was a huge target. He was tough though recently reminded him on Facebook about it lol. Hes a millionaire these days selling real estate in South Florida.

We did this! Telephone pole on one side and street sign or something on the other side. Idiotic.

One Halloween we tied string from one lamp post across the street to another. We ran around the corner and after a few minutes we heard the screeching of tires.

That made me think of playing ‘Smear The Queer’ or ‘Butt-Ball’…..

Again - so much shit kids wouldn’t do today for fear of being shot at by some pissed off victim - egging/waterballons/snowballs at houses or passing cars.

2 my old man did in the day he laughed about years later - putting abandon refrigerators onto rail road tracks at night - the town dump was just above the tracks and a train came through at around 55 every night - back in those days no safety controls. Someone would dump an old refrigerator and 3 or 4 kids would push it down onto the tracks just before nightfall and going home - then stay up waiting to hear that hellacious boom - today they’d be tagged as domestic terrorist.

Another classic game they played - made a “scarecrow” of sorts - and hung him off a rope from a tree on a blind curve people routinely took too fast. Speeding motorist would approach - they’d swing the scarecrow out and motorist would shit their pants panicking and swerving to avoid. Of course they wouldn’t call police because the skid marks showed they were going way too fast and they’d be in trouble too. Worked well until one of the more notorious drunks of town came flying by - swung it in front of him and he never so much as flinched - just mowed down the scarecrow and never touched the brakes - just kept going.

Can’t do things like bags of shit anymore - cameras everywhere.

“touch” football that turns into an all out tackle game still goes on - it’s the parents who are soft now - not the kids. Had a case of this a few years ago at work. 9-12 year old kids playing touch football after school at an after school program we insured - 9 year old decided to try to go full Jim Brown on a 12 year old kid - bad choice. 12 year old was like 2x his size and 9 year old bounced back about 4 yards after contact. Fortunately nothing serious - kid got up after 45 seconds and was ready to go again and actually kept playing.

3 days later parents hear the story from the other kids joking about the hit - talk to 9 year old and take him to ER crying injury/CTE. Then show the following Monday demanding to speak to the person in charge at the after school program. Clearly full of shit and the program knew it - but the stuff they were claiming was ridiculous. Kids will still play hard given the chance - parents and fears of lawsuits though curb the chances of that happening.

Shitty kids didn’t get trophies for being horrible and their parents shouldn’t have enrolled them in sports

Maybe the “arts”

The absolute 2 worst type of parents - ones who were “good” at sports and expect kids to be an extension of that and be better. Then there’s parent who absolutely sucked - and expects kid to be the star to fulfill their ego needs.

The whole trophies for kids thing - I don’t get at all. No need to give awards at all before say age 12-14. Before that age it should be learning the game. No one gets a trophy for best dribbler or best decision making - why give a 8 year old a trophy for beating other 8 year olds who suck. Makes them think they are better than what they are and next thing you know kid thinks he’s an entitled to NIL money and a new car.

Let them get to high school before giving awards - you know when you’re playing 4 years worth and f talent and not just a singular age group. Hey a 14 year old freshman outplays a 18 year old senior / from another school - yea - that’s accomplishment. But being the best 8 year old in a group of 20 from your school is not really all that impressive overall.

Coca- cola had a game that off you got all 50 bottle tops of different pro football players faces on the inside of the coke bottle and glued them to the right spots on a printed sheet they provided, you could turn it in for a prize.
1 filled sheet got you a pennant of you local team
2 filled sheets got you a bobble head of your local team.
5 filled sheets got you a Duke football.

I got my older brother to drill a hole through a small magnet and run about 1 foot of string through it. Then I fished every coke machine I could find on my bike in the coke cap collector on the machine for about two months. Ended up with 8 full sheets so I got one of each prize.
Mom said I ruined all my pants with syrup stains in the pockets from all the bottle caps. I did not care.

I was looking for an edge when I was 10. Still do. Lol. The things we learn as a kid.

Today kids would not know what a bottle cap is.
