Ok - so first some basic info. If a pro thief wants your car - they are going to get it. Trust me - handled many theft investigations and when they want it - they will get it. Of course 99.8% of all theft are more a “crime of opportunity” (aka dumb ass who leave keys in car or don’t take basic measures to not get stuff stolen.

Yes - you can get keys for a non remote fob car cut via dishonest person - but how many cars don’t have fobs these days ? And of those how many are worth the effort to steal.

Fob cars are easy to build a relay/booster box on - it basically “steals” the signal from the fob when it’s within 100’ or so - records it and allows the signal to be “assigned” to a generic fob. Thief then just walks right up - opens/starts the car and drives off. A lot of Challegers and other sports cars stolen using this method.

But again - pro thieves don’t want 99.9% of the cars out there - it’s kids and dumbass gangs like the Kia Boyz you deal with - they want something to ram a store front window/knock over an ATM or just pull a drive by in. And unless you make it easy for them - they go after softer targets like pizza guy/uber drivers at night - why go through all the effort when you can just order pizza to a empty house and flash a gun when the pizza guy gets to the door and take their ride AND get a hundred bucks. These aren’t deep thinkers we are dealing with.

not at a dealership they aren't. In order to make a new key fob, customers need proof of registration as owner of vehicle

Exactly - you can’t get parts at most places without a VIN - I damn well guarantee they aren’t giving you a key without proof of ownership and the vehicle being present.

Think about it - dealership is basically a license to print $$ - you gonna risk that for a few hundred bucks easy money? Even as a parts manager - your making 75k+ kickbacks from vendors sitting on a stool doing nothing but punching a keyboard - no one is risking that job unless it’s a VERY high end theft ring and even then.

JJ is sort of right. A lot depends on the age/type of car/key you have.
  1. Non-transponder keys (older cars) --> This can be done but it would take someone at the dealership or locksmith "breaking the law" by making the key without proof of ownership and if the key has a transponder it gets a lot more difficult.

  2. If its a newer car with a transponder in the keyfob, the car needs to be there (at dealership/locksmith) to program the new key and make it work.

BUT, there are ways people are stealing keyfob/transponder signals from people since the keyfob is always sending a signal out. The equipment can be bought on Amazon to do this. Car theives usually do this at night and sneak up to your house to pick up the signal. Store keys in a faraday box/pouch to avoid this problem.

  3. You apparently can get the programmed keyfob without the car being there but you need the 4 or 6 digit code that came on a tag attached to the keys when it was new.
That's what I remember from the dealership service rep when we replaced my daughter's keys.
Yep, all my car keys are in a faraday box.

Oh they def can and will. My babies mom stole my car keys amongst other shit when she left but anyway the guy who came to make me a new key gave me two prices, one for a re make and one for a new fob so the stolen would be rendered useless. $550 later my car was programmed for a dif key fob.

Depending on what you have - not a bad idea. Actually had some punks pop my company car once to get to the stuff inside - they quickly realized it was nothing they were interested in - laptop bag was empty and everything else was power tools - they actually tossed them in neighbors yard. Idiots didn’t realize the tools would have brought 10x what a crappy laptop would at a pawn shop.

Still most more likely to lose their converters than their entire car.

I knew guys in this chop shop industry years back. They are still in the business but in a different faction. They would tell me that the club would not detour them from stealing a car , that the club is very easy to disable and take off.
