Thinking of moving to Alabama

So quickly getting tired of Ohio weather and have been thinking of moving.

A few places on the radar - but more and more seem to be drawn towards Alabama. Low cost of living, decent climate and nice country plus lots of opportunities to do things outdoors.

Any reason to not to consider it ? I originally thought Montgomery or Birmingham- but Mrs is pushing for closer to the gulf and Mobile. Just not sure about the hurricanes and the ungodly heat down there every summer. But got to admit looking at houses - it’s tempting.

You're close to Biloxi, New Orleans if you get bored of golfing & beaches.

Did 4 years in Central NC - it’s different that’s for sure.

Southerners like to think they are smarter than their Northern counterparts. At the same time - biggest suckers falling for loud, fast talking New Yorkers are Southern folk.

Once you get past the inbreeding, the religion they constantly talk about yet whose teachings they never follow and the horrible diets. It’s fairly easy to assimilate into the culture down there. Just get yourself a MAGA hat, a #3 flag and a pickup with a gun rack - once you have this the welcome wagon will be by with a fresh set of sheets and a cooler full of Busch beer inviting you to their next rally.

You have definitely been here before if you already know that.

Got an attorney i work with regularly in Mississippi - has always told me to stay to North side of the state. Southern Mississippi is extremely poor overall.

Overall - state is pretty rough shape - even compared to West Virginia.

have you checked home prices in Bay St Louis or Pass Christian MS? Both in S MS

Another Katrina could easily put a large dent in the MS Gulf Coast. Having said that, don't sleep on that red neck state. They're making some interesting moves. Phasing out state income tax, and to be honest, even for those of us who live right on the beach, Homeowners insurance ain't near as bad as Florida. If you can get comfortable with a $25,000 deductible, you don't even feel that annual premium

No way in hell is ever do Florida.

Yea - homeowners is a complete scam in Florida - yet amazing other nearby states who get the same storms manage to keep insurance companies and rates are reasonable. Citizens killed the market in Florida and made it so no one wants to deal with it.

Even Texas - big state, lots of high dollar coastal homes and regularly get hit by storms - but no where near the insurance headaches. Sadly - companies are spreading it everywhere now - your seeing rates here in Ohio/Michigan and Indiana that are stupidly high - all because of losses in Florida and California they can’t make up due to socialist running the government and insurance commissions.

There's no gambling in Alabama (casinos)

Why do I need a land based casino when there are offshore sportsbooks ?

Haven’t been inside of a casino in probably 5 years - last times I went was just for holiday buffet more than gambling.

Why overpay to gamble in a casino when lower cost alternatives are plentiful ?

No over reaction in getting the hell out of here. Originally the weather didn’t bother me as much - since the heart attack and surgery - I’ve become much more sensitive to it and clearing snow is a lot harder.

We are not even anywhere near the lake/snow belt - cannot imagine living up there. Worked on the East side of Cleveland a long time - would be nothing to go in at 7am with flurries and walk out at 4 or 5 with a couple of feet on the car and a long ass drive ahead of me. No way I could do that these days.

Good luck @djefferis , in whatever you decide - we just recently moved to Prescott, AZ. from Southern California, wife’s only stipulations was:

1. Nowhere hotter.
2. We’re making money off of our house.
3. No city ‘Bull$#!T’ - gangs, drugs, graffiti, pollution, noise, etc., etc., etc.

I’d say we did pretty good here - I’d much rather avoid a family of deer than a group of ‘protesters’. Never even looked into the ‘South’, (wasn’t an option), but I know there’s beautiful picturesque (and affordable) places you could call home…..

Absolutely no “allegiance” to that school.

I follow them because I lived a decade in Cbus / but having lived there - I get exactly how damn annoying their fans are too.

I mean - when there’s news about something going on there - especially football related - it’s on the sports portion of news here in Cleveland - in Columbus they break into programming with breaking news updates about the Buckeyes.

I mean - I get it if you went to the school at least - but the damn state is full of trailer parks full of die hards who probably never graduated high school - much less attended a 4 year university. Good training for life in Alabama I guess.

Yea - but it’s 3 months of being stuck indoors in the ac during the day - vs 6 months of grey, freezing and miserable.

I can live with having to hang out in the house July-September. Being trapped in it from November through April sucks.

I hear you. If you remember a previous conversation you and I had, I used to live in Kent just a few miles east of you. Really nice college town but it's like you say, 6 months of grey, freezing and miserable.

I live in Arizona and we have hot temps (it's a dry heat though) from June to mid-September so 3 1/2 months but it's only hot in the late afternoon/early evenings. Beautiful mornings and late evenings. In the North it's cold all day long.
