So quickly getting tired of Ohio weather and have been thinking of moving.

A few places on the radar - but more and more seem to be drawn towards Alabama. Low cost of living, decent climate and nice country plus lots of opportunities to do things outdoors.

Any reason to not to consider it ? I originally thought Montgomery or Birmingham- but Mrs is pushing for closer to the gulf and Mobile. Just not sure about the hurricanes and the ungodly heat down there every summer. But got to admit looking at houses - it’s tempting.

i am very tempted to move south as well. the pricing and cost of living is extremely attractive. my mom would love it also and she would have to come with me. i do not want to go north cause the snow and cold is just worse obviously. if it was just me, maybe. but not with my mom. i also wouldn't want to be far from her.

i think you should consider it. this cold sucks. as long as you can still make a living. that is my worry also.

It depends where you’re from if you’re not southern and they know it they’ll chew you alive

Did 4 years in Central NC - it’s different that’s for sure.

Southerners like to think they are smarter than their Northern counterparts. At the same time - biggest suckers falling for loud, fast talking New Yorkers are Southern folk.

Once you get past the inbreeding, the religion they constantly talk about yet whose teachings they never follow and the horrible diets. It’s fairly easy to assimilate into the culture down there. Just get yourself a MAGA hat, a #3 flag and a pickup with a gun rack - once you have this the welcome wagon will be by with a fresh set of sheets and a cooler full of Busch beer inviting you to their next rally.

Cost of living isn’t too bad - a lot depends though on where your at - some cities worse than the Midwest for example and almost as much as NE. Nashville comes to mind - it’s no longer cheap.

Yea - snow and cold suck. I just can’t do it anymore - it’s hard on the heart and I need less stress.

I also want to get back to having a little place to be able to get away at. Something 20-100 acres in the middle of nowhere with a little cabin and a pond or 2. Don’t really hunt - but nothing like just sitting around fishing and drinking to relieve stress. I miss that and it would be hard to get where I’m at now and I don’t want to drive 3 hours back to the old stomping grounds.

We are actually getting away from the wife’s family/mother. I’m “lucky” - no family left - just a sibling I haven’t spoken to in a few years. Learned it’s more about the people who you choose to surround yourself with over those who you are related to by blood.

What would you do for work down there? If it were me I'd want to be near/in a major city

I’m 100% WFH - have been for a decade now - so literally can go anywhere so long as it’s in the US - has high speed internet and is outside of 2 states I can’t remember at the moment (they are weird ones - like DE and VT I think - don’t ask me why - something with workers rights/workers comp).

It’s nice being near a major city - but I hate living in them. Rather be an hour or 2 away and in a decent size city. Easy enough to catch a train into the bigger cities or fly to Atlanta. Traffic in Southern cities that have grown the last decade or so sucks as infrastructure hasn’t caught up yet.

You included "decent climate" and "ungodly heat down there every summer" in the same post.

Depends on where you are - still VERY segregated across the South.

Suburbs in general are 70%+ white.

City - 50/50.

Northern is poorer whites - Southern suburbs more well to do types.

Also a lot of pockets of Asian and Hispanic too from my experiences.

Edit to add - I’ve got Cleveland to my North and Akron to the East. Short of moving to Africa - nowhere I go is going to have MORE blacks than the cities around me now.

Yea - but it’s 3 months of being stuck indoors in the ac during the day - vs 6 months of grey, freezing and miserable.

I can live with having to hang out in the house July-September. Being trapped in it from November through April sucks.

Understood completely.

I don’t expect a change in scenery to change everything - every place comes with its own challenges.

Fortunately I can log on and visit BMR just about anywhere. Reading JJ’s latest keeps me in check and reminds me how bad life could really be.
