ESPN mentioned possibly seeing Verlander go back to the Stros. I'm not sure I see that. He had $43M contract this year and next and the Astros would have to give some serious developmental players to get him.

Although the Astros are desperate for starters, I'd be surprised if they made this move.

Verlander also has a no trade clause so he makes the call.

Only way is if they get a deal like Rangers did for Max, where Mets pay 70% or so of his remaining contract.

Stros historically cheap despite all their success

Agreed. But, Damn the Mets already have Bobby Bonilla day and now kind of a Max Scherzer day (for a year or two). Adding a Verlander day for 2 years I guess would just be business as usual. :ROFLMAO:

They would be paying more for guys playing for other teams than they do for their own team.

Yeah hard to see that getting done just don't see a real match that would work for both there.

If the Astros are going to add some sping which I am not convinced of Eduardo Rodriguez/Michael Lorenzen seem more likely.

I don't think they do much of anything, maybe a cheap af OF bat to make it look like they didn't do shit at the deadline but doubt its much more.

money does not buy titles baseball
Hmmmm... There is some truth to this statement.
But, I think you can agree, if you don't spend money, you aren't going anywhere.

Civale to Rays. Big for the Rays as our pitchers are dropping like flies
I don't understand why the Guardians made this trade. It's not like they're sellers but I guess they aren't buyers either. This is a big get for the Rays because Civale is having a good year and should help them out a lot.

Can't wait to see what they had to give up for him.
Hope it’s something like a player to be named later

Astros giving up:
Drew Gilbert (AA - Corpus Christi Hooks) and Ryan Clifford (A - Ashville Tourists)

For Verlander, however, they get two intriguing prospects from an otherwise thin Houston system. Gilbert was the team's first-round pick last year out of Tennessee and ESPN's Kiley McDaniel has a 50 future value grade on him. He tore up Class A to start the season with a .361 average in 21 games, but has slowed to a .241/.342/.371 line at Double-A. He's a power/speed guy with the possibility of remaining in center field, allowing the Mets to eventually move Brandon Nimmo over to left field as he ages.

Like Gilbert, Clifford is a left-handed hitter with perhaps even more projectable power than Gilbert. Drafted in the 11th round out of high school, the Astros gave him second-round money to sign and he's already outperformed their initial expectations as scouts now project 30-homer potential. At 19 years old, he's already reached High-A and is hitting .291/.399/.520 with 18 home runs across the two levels. Kiley gives him a strong 45 FV as he's limited to right field or maybe first base, but clearly the bat has a chance to be pretty special.

This is getting better and better for the Astros....
According to the NY Post:
  • Mets are paying Verlander's $35M this year. He has a $43M contract this year and next year. That must mean the Astros are only covering $8M in 2023.
  • Mets are also paying Verlander's $35M in 2024, again that should mean the Astros cover only $8M next year.
  • If the 2025 option is triggered (occurs if Verlander pitches 140 innings in 2024), then Mets will pay $17.5M to Verlander in 2025 out of $35M he would be owed.

Wow. Astros getting last years Cy Young winner for $8M for remainder of 2023 and $8M for 2024 and maybe $17.5M in 2025.
