and he will wait for 4 yrs. to go back to the NCAA.
He's not going back. IMO I never thought Jim would stay as long as he did in college. He wears out his welcome wherever he is because of his personality and because he won a championship with Michigan I don't see him ever going back to college even if he never wins a Super Bowl. He knew this was coming like you pointed out so I think he just got out while the getting was good at his alma mater.

He usually doesn't stay longer than 5 years which is why I'm surprised his tenure with the Wolverines lasted so long. This might be his last head coaching job but I can't really say for sure because he never stays too long in one place.
Imagine the hype if he can turn the Chargers around this season.
