Thailand Leads Southeast Asia in 2025 Press Freedom Index, Vietnam Ranks Lowest
The 2025 Press Freedom Index rankings for Southeast Asia, compiled by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), reveal a varied landscape for media freedom across the region.
Thailand emerges as the top-ranked nation within Southeast Asia, placing 85th globally with an index score of 56.72. Malaysia follows closely, ranked 88th worldwide with a score of 56.09. Brunei rounds out the top three in the region, sitting at 97th globally (53.47).
Further down the rankings, several countries cluster in the middle range. The Philippines is ranked 116th (49.57), Singapore 123rd (45.78), and Indonesia 127th (44.13).
Laos (150th / 33.22) and Cambodia (161st / 28.18) occupy lower positions within the region. The index indicates the most challenging environments for press freedom in Southeast Asia are found in Myanmar, ranked 169th globally (25.32), and Vietnam, which holds the lowest rank in the region at 173rd worldwide with a score of 19.74.
The RSF Press Freedom Index assesses the state of journalism and media freedom in 180 countries and territories annually.
