As of now I'm not serious about moving there as I'm only 35, but the more I travel to SEA, the more I think about enjoying life and retiring early. I used to always have this American idea that I would retire at 64, now I'm thinking more like 45, probably 50 at the latest. I'll have to look more into TRC, that is a new term to me. And yes, I've heard the same, that Thailand and Cambodia are much easier to move to. Agreed that Vietnam is the best, but I still want to explore more of Cambodia as I didn't get to see much of it.
Yes Cambodian people should be very appreciative of Viet people as they ended the Cambodian genocide. I spoke with a few locals and they mentioned how Vietnam has been constantly been trying to take land and overstayed welcome after they ran Pol Pot out of PP. I just found it interesting that some resent the people that helped them. Overall it sounds like a complicated situation though.
As for the money situation, it was fairly comparable. We were mainly in PP, and stayed in a more touristy area, near the Royal Palace. We found food in Vietnam would never be more than $1-$2, whereas Cambodia in certain parts would charge up to $3-$4. But yeah, probably charging us Westerner prices. Next time I go I want to check out Sihanoukville, Kep and Kampot.
