What up Illini.

I had a great time in SEA, would love to live there some day. Not sure how possible that’s as a foreigner. I got a bunch of questions for you, answer whatever you want or can.

How were you able to move to Vietnam? What kind of visa do you have? Didn’t they recently extend many visas to like 75 days?

What made you move to SEA?

Last year I only went to Vietnam, this time I did both Vietnam and Cambodia. I found the countries similar but different. Obviously Cambodia is a bit behind in terms of development. My main questions about the two countries are, why is Cambodia more expensive than Vietnam, yet the Riel is worth much more than the VND? I also researched a lot about the history of the two countries, seems like there is a bit of a disconnect between Cambodians and Vietnamese? I kind of sensed that Cambodians don’t really like Vietnamese, but maybe I’m wrong about that. I know the two countries have had a conflicted history between each other.

IMO America and Canada are much more similar than Cambodia and Vietnam. Just random observations, enjoy your trip to Cambodia.

I’m headed to SEZ Sihanoukville now. Will answer later. Cambodians should be very thankful to Vietnamese, if it wasn’t for the Vietnamese army there wouldn’t be many of them left. They went into Campuchia and stopped Poi Pot and his regime. Maybe you were just doing the “tourist” thing and didn’t go deep into the life there. Campuchia is not more expensive. But just going there for a few days you might not see that. You can easily move here , staying here and being resourceful is a different thing. I have a TRC. I don’t use a visa. If you are serious about moving I can help you. Campuchia and Thailand are 1000000x easier to stay visa and residence wise thsn Việt Nam but Thailand sucks. Campuchia would be cool to live in but Việt Nam by far is the best place. If you are serious we can talk on the phone or do a zoom call. I just helped a friend of mine come here. I got him all set up with his TRC , apartment and a job.

As of now I'm not serious about moving there as I'm only 35, but the more I travel to SEA, the more I think about enjoying life and retiring early. I used to always have this American idea that I would retire at 64, now I'm thinking more like 45, probably 50 at the latest. I'll have to look more into TRC, that is a new term to me. And yes, I've heard the same, that Thailand and Cambodia are much easier to move to. Agreed that Vietnam is the best, but I still want to explore more of Cambodia as I didn't get to see much of it.

Yes Cambodian people should be very appreciative of Viet people as they ended the Cambodian genocide. I spoke with a few locals and they mentioned how Vietnam has been constantly been trying to take land and overstayed welcome after they ran Pol Pot out of PP. I just found it interesting that some resent the people that helped them. Overall it sounds like a complicated situation though.

As for the money situation, it was fairly comparable. We were mainly in PP, and stayed in a more touristy area, near the Royal Palace. We found food in Vietnam would never be more than $1-$2, whereas Cambodia in certain parts would charge up to $3-$4. But yeah, probably charging us Westerner prices. Next time I go I want to check out Sihanoukville, Kep and Kampot.

Welcome to driving in Hà Nội

Can you drive like that Illini?

Coming back to America I have such a respect for how the Vietnamese drive. My entire time there I've seen a total of one accident, that's it. Whereas if I drive in America, you see an accident once every couple hours. Someone did tell me they are cracking down on drinking and driving as it is becoming more of an issue.

I drive very careful but I go with the flow which is usually like that. Make no mistake about it. There are tons of accidents here, lots of injures and deaths from motorbike accidents.
