There are different ways foreigners are allowed to be here long term.Short story is he’s paying a guy under the table for decade temp residency.
1.I started a company. I pay taxes here and my company is registered, that gives me residency. It is heavily monitored and checked regularly because it is 100% foreign owned so they check it. It is a 2 year residency card which I renew, I never have to leave the country if I did not want to.
2. Most people are here on a tourist visa, in the past depends on your nationality, it was 3 months to a year. Now every country only gets 30 days which can be renewed but you have to leave the country, no way around that. That will change in the future.
3. Marry a Vietnamese woman and you get a 5 year visa exemption which can be renewed every 5 years as long as you are still married.
4. Get a job with a company and you will get a work permit and residency card, to get this you must have a degree and the qualifications for that job. You will get a residency card for two years and you can renew it as long as you are with that same job. If you work at a different job and are caught, it will be revoked and possibly could be deported.
Vietnam does not offer any kind of retirement visa at all. Other countries in SEA are very very easy to stay and much more relaxed but then you have all the western trash living there, for example Thailand, it is just disgusting, it is near here but you have a different type of foreigner there. Complete trash of people. Cambodia is one of my favorite places in the world but lots of scum there. Laos and Myanmar are great but are 20 years behind Vietnam. Singapore, Malaysia are great but wouldn't want to live there. Vietnam is a complicated country but once you figure it out, it is paradise. So many Americans live here, it is unreal, they feel the same way I do, they are never leaving!
