Was in elementary when this happened.
I remember how upsetting it was because the teacher Christa McCauliffe was on it. The teachers in our school were visibly upset. First time I remember seeing some adults cry.
And all because one of the least expensive parts on the Space Shuttle, an O-Ring in the Solid Rocket Booster, was never tested in below-freezing temperatures.
NASA never imagined they’d be launching in temperatures like this at Kennedy Space Center in South Florida. It reached 22 degrees the night before the launch.
