def a lot of scammers out there. i read of dudes pulling 20k cards and people not getting their card. also a lot of slight of hands.

this tiktok/whatnot and other platforms have explod. its the california gold rush all over again. you can profit 7 figures a year on this. dudes are ripping $500 boxes and selling out in a couple hours. i truly am amazed.

Personally never got the whole thing - I mean I get it, buying a lotto ticket hoping for a big hit - but I’d just as well rely on my ability to pick a winner and get lucky - win cash and buy exactly what I want than getting lucky solely and the universe delivering me something I want when I get lucky - but hey, I think the fastest route to happiness is the shortest path possible. To those who like taking a longer path - more power to you.

There’s fraud out there / but always has been and always will be. It’s like finding a fraud in sportsbetting or poker and suggesting the industry is all like that. There have been frauds in sports cards for as long as I can remember and that starts for me in the mid 1980s. From searching rack packs in K-mart aisles using collation list checklist to paying off shipping clerks and opening/resealing wax packs - it’s happened. Progressed to trimming cards - paying off grading companies and forged autographs.

Sports and scammers are just a natural combination.

agree with everything you said in this post.

I get it too.... instead of buying a blaster box that cost $30 and look for a skenes just buy the pirates and have 4 or 5 chances to pull him.

the other alternative is just buy the single card off ebay.

but theres no fun in that. its def a form of gambling and people get off on it.

totally get it.

How long have you been doing the cards thing?

I used to be into it big time

Definitely a gambling-like feel especially at a younger age when you haven’t discovered sports betting yet

1996 upper deck SPX pulled Michael Jordan AND Penny Hardaway auto insert redemption out of same pack fresh box in a little sports clothing store in mall sitting on counter at cash register

Couple of other guys here are collectors too and have threads somewhere…

im 50 now. i havent collected since junk wax era. went to the card show here in philly suburbs a little bit ago and started purchasing some. im not really into it anymore but i caught a little excitement from it last month or so, especially with baseball season around the corner.

the best cards i have are from the 60s and 70s from a craigslist post i picked up about 10 years ago or maybe even 15.

someone posted they have baseball card boxes on the curb out for trash day in philly. I saw this was just posted and i got in my car and got them. it was like 2am. it was about 4 shoeboxes filled with 60s and 70s cards. good ones too. i cant believe someone actually posted it instead of just putting it out on trash day. still have them.

Same here I got out of it but it still catches my interest

I mostly like low numbered Auto & game-worn inserts

My boy has a few jordan 2nd and 3rd year and a couple of his rookies. From packs bought when we were young. I had a couple 2nd year Jordan's but my mom threw them out.

Hold on to them - someday the market will realize that 87/88 Fleer press run was a small percentage of the 86/87 run. Of course everyone wants “rookies” - but those 2nd years are like 5x harder to find.

I’ve got one somewhere - just have to dig through the storage unit to find it. From memory it’s pretty nicely centered too - if I find it - will probably be the only card I ever send in for grading if it looks as good as I remember.

I remember guys telling me in the mid 90s to buy the absolute best looking 70s cards I could find. We all knew the 50s/early 60s stuff was valuable - but stuff from the 70s it just seemed like people paid the same for a slightly off center/sun faded or soft cornered example as they did for a “10”. Things like those chipped up edged ‘71 and ‘75 Topps and perfectly centered Ozzie Smith rookies didn’t command a significant premium then. Now try and find a 9 or 10 grade Nolan Ryan from the era or a highly graded rookie and tell me the premium difference. Toss in non smudged Jack Morris and Molitor/Trammel rookies in that list too. Lots of them “survived” - but finding a perfect example is a lot different than finding a survivor.

It is nuts all the 1/1 or supposedly 1/1 cards and then a variation of it pops up. Hard to know what to believe and the markets are so volatile.
Do you folks grade your older cards at all?
Yeah Wild Card company is good at that

Purple border or background numbered to 10 and then also the same thing for several other colors

Same card just that difference

I started collecting and got into the hobby years ago when LCS's were the thing and then got into breaking for a few years.

the hobby isn't the same anymore filled with scammers and breaking has turned into more of a get rich quick scheme kind of thing. collecting hardly exists anymore it's a flip it fast for the cash kind of industry now.

I still buy into a break here and there or grab a blaster etc from local stores. But I don't put nearly as much time and effort into it anymore. it's just less enjoyable

There’s a fb group called sportscard nonsense and people were ripping the patches out. The patches didn’t belong to the player on the card. Makes it tough to collect the newer items as it feels it is a money grab from the companies now.

Pokémon is insane too. Topps produced a 1/1 of a baseball player and his bat butt cap, I think it was a Charizard. Wonder what it will sell for.

I’m not near as involved with it anymore either

But as mentioned earlier I prefer limited auto & game worn inserts

I always thought the jersey/patch cards could be so much more

They have jersey cards that will say on the back “ you have received a game worn jersey piece worn by Tom Brady in an actual game” numbered 1 of 10

But that is vague

They could take it to the next level and take them from big games such as “you have received a game worn jersey card worn by Tom Brady against the Buffalo Bills in week 13 2024. Brady threw for 394 yard with 4 passing TDs”

I think there’s already a $100k bounty for that card
