I think a better question would be how many people here claim disability for being a 5 foot 3 300 pound fat fukk?
Serious question. How does this work? I am wondering how people qualify for Medicare coverage if they are not old enough yet (65 yo) but claim to be disabled? Do you just find a doctor who says, "You are disabled" and then these programs cover your medical costs or do you have to go to a specific Medicare type doctor who checks to confirm the disability?

Do you also get Social Security at the same time for being disabled?

Not throwing stones here. Just curious how it works.
Maybe these are dumb questions.

Not nearly that simple from my understanding of the system.

Basically - 2 different systems - Medicare (you pay in and receive health care either at a point you become permanently and completely disabled) and SSI (you receive cash payment based on your inability to maintain employment due to your disability.

Medicare - you have to prove your case to the administrator. Typically medical peer reviews of your physicians records. Not nearly as contentious as SSI as there is no “cash” benefit - you’re just seeking medical care - and you paid in to the fund from your employment.

SSI is what you hear and see people fighting for as that’s $$ in their pocket monthly. You don’t have to have worked a day before getting it and the payouts aren’t great - but considering the majority of people who seek it don’t have a chance at high paying careers - it’s free $$ and many will seek out alternative “side hustles”. Hard to get approved because of the number of people hustling the system - you see attorneys all the time offering their services for a contingency fee of whatever “back benefits” they can qualify you for.

Veterans are a completely separate matter under the VA. Honorable discharges get lifetime health care and eligible lifers and disabled vets get additional services like dental/optical. Disabled vets with a service connected illness also get monthly pay based on their impairment rating and if that rating exceeds 70% I believe- they receive spousal benefits should they pass.

Key takeaway - everything except SSI is PAID for by the recipient - if you didn’t pay in, you cannot collect from the fund. Medicare and VA benefits are insurance plans - you pay a premium and receive a benefit if you have a qualifying occurrence.

SSI - like Medicaid is “welfare” for lack of a better term - you need to do nothing to receive it - just qualify and your on the dole.
