I think that's why I liked him, he always called it like it was.

I remember 2 things about Jose:

1.) He sold his appearance to whoever would pay him. I can't remember the price he asked but I think he had to have another guy with him present at all times.

2.) He pointed out how bad players were in Babe Ruth's time and even went to say that Babe Ruth sometimes took one or two steps before hitting the ball. That would never happen in Jose's time.

I played Poker in Vegas with Jose. Cool guy, but I knew to keep my distance.

To his reputation, he's edgy. A young kid patted Jose on the shoulder. I thought Jose was gonna kill him.

Also, Jose was there with a girl 25 years younger than him.

Jose frowned and said "Yeah. Tony Phillips and Dave Henderson, too."

I always thought that Jose was a little mis-understood. He's smarter than people think.

He spoke out about the steroid use. MLB didn't like that. Late in his career teams black-balled him...and he couldn't get a Hitting Coach job, either.

I said to him that "You must have been right at 500 Home Runs or just short."

He knew the exact #. "I had 462 Home Runs. But I only played 15 years."

Have to say, he was a great hitter. I would have bet money he had over 500 HRs. Its too bad he didn't make the milestone. There's only like 30 in that club.
