For me it was "The Sarge" Gary Matthews SR. What an under-rated player. He had a long career with above average numbers and has some of the best post-seasons numbers that you don't hear of. Talk about stepping up when it counts. I was devastated as a kid when we traded him and Bobby Dernier for nothing. When Daryl Strawberry came on the scene, I added a few faster circles of the bat that I already had with Sarge and started hitting from both sides of the plate. Those were the days. Fortunate to grow up near Philly seeing those late 70s/early 80s Phillies teams. If I was born 10 years later than no doubt my stance and swing would have been Lenny Dykstra. Look at this swing by the Sarge. It is a thing of beauty and you thought Barry was the king of the bats toss:

Many say it was an ugly swing, but it's probably the most compact and consistent use of weight shift thru the zone I've still ever seen.

Dante Bichette from the right side was very compact & powerful when in Colorado.

Never really copied anyone batting.
Pitching though was a different story. My Mom sat behind the center field fence and I wanted her to see me when I pitched so I copied Luis Tiant.
