I can't believe it would be sponsored by a non-alcoholic beer. That's crazy to me

Believe it - league can’t risk pissing someone off by allowing a “alcohol” sponsor.

Have a sponsor in Emirates whose owner (Dubai) has connections to terrorism - fine. Players who are involved in prop fixing - turn a blind eye. But no way can we promote responsible drinking of alcohol.

It is the stupidest thing in the world of sports. The moment NASCAR lost Reynolds as a sponsor due to the government deal - it became clear what was happening. Even stupider - the new owners of Winston (Imperial Brands) sued the Winston Cup Museum for using the name of the former cup series which was granted in perpetuity by the former owner (and whose museum literally was in Reynolds HQ backyard).

You have a sport in baseball with beer companies intertwined throughout its owners the last century and now a league who is doing all it can to distance itself from “undesirables” - while still finding a way to take their ample marketing budgets.

Serious question... Help us understand this Djeff. Is it the Liberal Left that is against "alcohol" sponsors or Christian Right?

I ask because I don't see the left being against alcohol (free speech, support for marijuana laws, etc...) whereas the religous groups I can see being for abstinence, yet they are some of the biggest alcohol drinkers I've ever partied with.

What group is pushing this elimination of alcohol sponsorships?
I know you will have some good points on this.
Thx

Not so much left vs right - just the NBA who has to maintain a “squeaky clean” image and not offend anyone - nor exclude any age group.

Makes zero sense in a way - affiliating yourself with an alcohol sponsor is “bad” - but partnering up with a gambling sponsor is apparently ok. I mean it would be one thing if a ref got trashed and killed a bus load of nuns or something saying “we need to get away from being associated with booze” - but hey “we had a ref and player both taking payoffs from gamblers - let’s jump into bed with DraftKings” somehow is smart business.

NBA is all about making as much revenue as it can and the players association is right there with it as they have a guaranteed split. It ultimately comes down to how big the check is as to how far they will go - right now it’s not “fitting” for their image as AB/Inbev is only willing to spend so much and the other big boys are being very cautious with spending as beer sales are tanking.

Now let some Chinese company take over one of these breweries and start making a marketing push to take on the king of beers in the US - watch their will suddenly be an alcohol sponsor again - just like other sports. It’s as bad as Coke and Pepsi ponying up to be the “official” drink at places…the amount of money paid to get visibility is stupid relative to the benefit in my opinion. But when you’re printing money like these places do when they are on an upswing.

Its kind of crazy in US. Compared to UK... damn near 50% of the Premier league teams are sponsored by gambling places.

And there’s never any controversy in soccer about match fixing or suspicious results

I mean - I get it, gambling is just a past time over there. For years you had one option in the US - Las Vegas - for sports betting (legally).

Still - don’t get the NBA as a whole and can’t watch it generally or bet it. Just not my thing and hasn’t been since the 80s.
