I found and interesting article on this topic from Samford University (April 2022). This person was a Senior Marketing and Finance student with concentrations in Data Analytics and Sports Marketing. He wanted to understand the correlation between MLB winning % and the game's stats.

Key Points:

> Run Differential is the most correlated stat for winning % in MLB. No shocker here. You score more than you allow --> You win more.

> Various pitching stats (ERA, WHIP, FIP, etc...) are more leveraging than offensive stats for a team to be a winner. The "so what" of this point is that, stopping runs is more indicative of a winning team than scoring runs.

So, long-term, as a general rule to consider....
If you are picking a team to win, they should have a higher run differential than their opponent. If the run differential is close between them, then see which team allows the fewest runs.

Obviously, this is just a general rule of thumb but it may help your selection process.

I’m usually high on the team record when a starting pitcher takes the mound. Not referring to his W/L record on decisions per se which can wildly vary.

8 of the 10 most correlated stats for teams winning are all related to pitching.

Clearly pitching is a more leveraging measure for winning teams than offense. But, I think we all knew this since the first thing most everyone looks at is the starting pitcher ERA/WHIP/etc.....

What is surprising is how correlated the data is to the pitching stats.

I look at least half a dozen of different things before I make a wager regarding MLB.
I do similar.

I quickly look at a s#it ton of data for a first pass for each game. Takes about a 20-25 min to compile all the data (scrapping internet sites) and about 5 minutes per game to decide if its on my card.

This is my spreadsheet used just to make a 1st pass on the games.

If I pick one after looking at this data then I dig a little deeper into the recent data (3-4 games) for the starters. Then I look at how the team is trending (winning/losing trends and units +/-). Finally I look at injury report.

Then, if stars are aligned, I make a play on that particular game. Takes at most 5 min to decide.

Some say.... Its too much data and I'm overanalyzing games.
After 1-2 weeks into the season, looking at the pile of data to make picks happens quickly.
