Here's to you, Dr King. One of the great horn-dogs of all-time.

Sixty years later, I'd have to say that any reasonable mind would say that life in America has improved for minorities.

One historical court case. Took place in 1971:

Before the Spencer Haywood trial, NBA prospects could not go directly to the pros out of hi-school. The Haywood lawyers argued that it wasn't fair to make Spencer wait four years before earning a pro salary. Spencer had come from a poor family with ten children. Spencer was the one who could most easily provide significant earnings for his family.

Here's to you, Spencer. You impacted future players significantly. He's still alive, btw.

Silver, appreciate your posts. Very interesting.

Middle-wt from the 1980s had to be the most competitive division. Would be interesting to see what Odds were for some of those fights. Those guys were seemingly on the same plane and vulnerable to loss every time.

I know Duran was a slight dog in the first fight vs Leonard. According to my research:

Leonard was 9-5 in the first and still 3-2 fave in the second.

So, I'm going to say that Duran was about +160 in the 1st fight and +130 in the 2nd fight.
...The Leonard-Duran series always confused me. Leonard LOOKED so much better to me, I never thought he would lose to Duran BUT HE DID.
Leonard was my guy in boxing, I was heart broke when he lost to Duran. It was Before cable tV in my area. But at the Round House Arena at UTC they had closed circuit for the big fights. I don't remember the year but I was 12 or 13. To young to go myself. I was staying the night with my cousin of the same age. He had a stereo in his room and they gave updates after each round on the station we were listening too.
As the years have gone by I've watched both fights many times. The first which I think Was one of the great fights in history and I may be biased but I thought he out scored Duran.
Years later When he fought Hagler I thought Hagler would knock him out, turned out to be another great fight.

that was when boxing was at it's peak imo. Do you remember the Hagler vs. Hearns fight. 3 of the best rounds in boxing history . I have not watched a fight in 25 years or so. miss the old days of boxing.

Exactly. I'm not really a boxing historian. But that decade jumps out for having the most classic fights.

If you paid for the fight, you normally got your money's worth. I'd have to even think about all the great bouts from the 1980 Middle-weights.

Could not agree more. Leonard, Duran, Hearns, Hagler, all beast. Ill get to watching those fights from the late 70's, 80's, and early 90's before I know it I've spend hours watching. It will be 3am when I realize how many I've watched. Be so pumped up I'll have to watch more.
