I quit grinding poker for a living literally the day before this bill passed the senate. If I had stuck with it I don't know if I could have made it with the new tax law. Not being able to deduct all my losses would mean not only getting taxed on income that I didn't make, but it would also likely bump me into a higher tax bracket, so I'd be paying a higher rate of tax as well.
In practice, this bill is just incentivizing live poker players to cheat on their taxes... since Trump & DOGE fired most of the tax auditors the players will get away with it for now, but when the auditors eventually get hired back there's sure to be a flood of poker players getting audited. I went through that once and it's not fun.
It's hard to understate how horrible this law is for pro gamblers.
