So here’s a funny/sad story about Costco and the horses.
My buddy always sends me $200/$300 or so to make his Derby bets every year.
He lives in Austin. I live about 20 minutes from Retama. Smallish track but it’s nice inside and they have 365 simulcast.
So in 2022 I get there early to make a few bets for myself and all his bets/combos. He usually likes to do several Tri wheels, a few exacta boxes, etc.
I finally get done making all his bets. This meant also calling him from outside in the bleachers and talking through his bets again because his math was off on a few of his wheels. All said and done I think he used all but $7 of his money he sent me. I took a photo of all of his tickets. Sent them to him. And I was spent having to wait in line twice. Once initially and another time to cancel a couple of his bets and rebet new ones. Told him I was leaving. I had spent about 45-50 minutes total in line.
Headed back north on Interstate 35 but not before stopping at Costco on the other side of the highway from the track to grab a hotdog and soda.
I was in the middle of eating when my buddy texts “hey if I still have any money left get me $5 on the 99/1 shot”
I let him know where I was, and that it would take me about 7-8 minutes to get back to the track after I eat but I’d go if he really wanted the bet. He said don’t sweat it.
You know what happened. I felt horrible as I saw that horse come through down the stretch.
Lucky for me we’ve known each other a long time and while it would have been a nice score he didn’t really need the money.
