It's easy to say they should've traded him but most teams know their best shot at getting Ohtani is this off season especially since they wouldn't have to give up elite prospects plus major league ready players to get him. The Angels have been a train wreck the past 2 decades and badly need to start over.

perhaps in some people's eyes but i believe in evaluating decisions at the time of the decision not in retrospect. this goes for everything in life. hindsight will always be 20/20 but we must weigh the factors at the time we make the decision sans crystal ball.

at the time of the trade deadline it appears they did not have enough strong offers as other teams were not interested in "renting him" for 2-3 mos then losing him.

if it does not get hurt, and they make a playoff run, we call them geniuses.

A UCL tear can be quite minor and from what I've read Ohtani's tear is not a bad one. There's no reason to risk making it worse with the LAA out of contention.
