During the final round of the 124th U.S. Open tournament on June 16, it seemed as if Rory McIlroy would come out victorious.
After taking the lead over Bryson DeChambeau, it seemed McIlroy was going to win his first major tournament in nearly a decade.
However, in a stunning turn of events, DeChambeau carded a final round even-par 71 to finish one stroke ahead of McIlroy. And the heartbreaking defeat was too much for the Irish golf star.
The broadcast captured McIlroy's reaction, during which he took off his hat and abruptly left room. He then bolted from Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina, a dramatic exit that was also captured on video.
McIlroy walked straight out of the clubhouse, got into his vehicle and left. He did not stick around to see DeChambeau get handed his second U.S. Open championship trophy. He previously won the major in 2004.
While McIlroy made a brilliant comeback, he fell apart during the final stretch. He missed two late putts opened the door for DeChambeau to take the win.
DeChambeau bags $4.3 million as the U.S. Open championship winner, while McIlroy takes home approximately $2.23 million for his second place finish.
