A couple of numbers stuck out to me.
“only” lead league in steals 6 times
“only” a 10 time all star
130 steals in a season
The first 2 just don’t seem to add up - especially considering how prolific he was at stealing bases early on in his career.
The second likely had a lot to do with his relationship with writers and some teammates. He was the best hitter and he knew it - and let it be known. A lot of guys didn’t like that lack of humility.
130 steals - let that sink in - damn near a steel a game on average. Someone getting 80 a game now would be impressive - he almost doubled that.
I’d have to agree - one of the best lead off players of not the best. A lead off batter is only guaranteed to start the inning as a batter once - but if I needed a runner aboard - few I’d want as manager more than Rickey in his prime. The fact he not only could get aboard - but hit a HR at any time was a serious bonus. Speed/power and a great hitter - a fairly rare combination and a proven winner.
