He stayed cooped up in his apartment all day
Doug definitely learned/knew how to live not spending much money day to day.

That’s why I thought all along his numbers on what he “needed” to retire and never work again (a couple of million I think it was) were way off. He could have moved to many different towns and paid cash for a house, still put a nice chunk in the bank, and used the lessons he already had imbedded in him for a frugal lifestyle to have a nice, pretty stress-free life. Only would have had to do a few side hustles here and there to make extra cash if he wanted to. (I suggested this to him when the $ was at or near its peak)

Sad what ultimately happened. Was really rooting for one last home run.

worst part is Dougie never enjoyed the money when he had some. NOt that I know of....no vacations, no assets purchased, no house, no cars, no memoribilia, no live games he went to see

maybe he did. I hope so. But all he did was gamble gamble gamble, what's the point of winning if you aren't going to enjoy the winnings
Totally agree. Me and Sam were talking about this yesterday.

I think several of us mentioned a time or two along the ride to take a few grand and go somewhere warm with a beach for a couple of weeks and don’t think about gambling.

I can't imagine what it must feel like to have 400k+ cold card cash at his disposable to basically nothing now. and for what? To lose it on 3 hour sporting events and now has to go back to work. I can't even fathom what that must feel like. I can't relate because I would of used that $ for my future.

If his monthly nut was $2,000 (and I definitely don’t think it was that high). He could have lived 20-plus years (factoring in some interest on the principal) on what he had.

Monthly nut of $1,500 would have been good for 25 years plus.

And if he moved to a different city or state probably even better. I once told him he could come to SEA , start a new life and he would of been set.

I once told him I lived in one of the nicest mid-size cities in my state (no state taxes to boot) and a sweet 3-bedroom, 2-bath house could be had for under $300k. Sure wish he would have. Hundreds of cities like it across the US that aren’t NYC. Didn’t get the impression Doug had a lot of family there except that crazy ex-gf.

There are many states you can get nice homes for 150k or less too. LIfe changing money for most people. Odds are for him to ever get near that again is gonna be hard.

A cautionary tale.

Love the guy. Hope by some miracle he makes it back with another home run hit. Seems like it’s more difficult to bet these though for the big payoffs as far as the books accepting them.
