Cincinnati Reds second baseman Billy Martin (left) walked out to the pitcher's mound to greet Chicago Cub's pitcher Jim Brewer with a punch to the eye in the second inning on Aug. 4, 1960 at Wrigley Field. Martin claimed that one of Brewer's pitches came a too close to him. Brewer was immediately taken to hospital with a broken orbit bone under his right eye. Martin was ejected from the game, which the Cubs won 5-3.

Two days later, Brewer underwent three hours of surgery to repair the shattered bone below his eye. A team of three surgeons worked on the Cubs pitcher. He wouldn’t pitch again until the following season. Martin was suspended for five games and fined him $500.
