I think if the Niners had scored a TD that KC would have tried for 2 on their possession and gone for the win. I bet if Shannahan had to do it over again he'd defer in OT and give the Chiefs the ball first so he'd know what he'd have to do with his possession. The problem was that the Niners Defense was gassed so taking the ball also made some sense there. It sucks but I don't fault that for the Niners losing just the mistakes they made with turnovers cost them.

What difference does it make anyway whether or not the SF fullback knows the OT rules?

He’s not calling the plays, and he has a job to do when a play is called.

So it seems much ado about nothing.

But they should still know the rules, obviously. After all they’re professionals of the game.

It’s the contrast that is so surprising.

Niners players didn’t know anything about it while Chiefs players were sick of hearing about it.
Mahomes said they were sick about hearing about it all the way back to the preseason.

The difference between a team that had been there before and been successful, and expected to be there again.

Anyone notice KC scored with 3 sec left in overtime

Mahomee scrambles more they lose. Yes they would have lost on 2nd down
Time wasn’t a factor in OT. Not even sure why they had a traditional quarter clock. Only clock they needed is the play clock.

Maybe they change ends every 15 minutes?? That wound be the only reason I can think of they needed a 15:00 clock with these OT postseason rules.

49ers had 2nd and 5 at the Chiefs 35 yard line with under 3 minutes. If as a coach you don't understand in a tied game against the defending Superbowl champ with the best QB in the league on the other side that the game is probably won or lost right there and that you have 3 downs to make 5 yards there really isn't much more to say.

Purdy looked 5'8 all game. Batted balls, ducking and off throws under pressure. Team is so good they win it without the punt fumble which guy tried to scoop instead of jumping on it. Again bad coaching

It's not an overtime period or an overtime quarter. It's a new game half, (IE 2 quarters), when an offensive score on the 1st possession doesn't automatically win. The other team gets a possession and the game is only over after those 2 possessions if 1 team has scored more points than the other. After that it's sudden death.

Guy on tv said time would have expired. Don't know
They started a new game in overtime. The rules changed because of the Buffalo Bills against the Chiefs in the playoffs in overtime where the Bills didn't get a chance to possess the ball because the Chiefs scored a touchdown. If the Chiefs ran out of time in the first overtime the drive would have continued in the second overtime which is why the Chiefs were so deliberate on their drive.

There are a couple good reasons why a team would take the ball first in post-season overtime.

One that Tony Romo hinted at was - if you feel your defense is gassed and you want some extra time to rest -- maybe you want to go over some adjustments and quick film study on the sideline

Two would be that if the teams scored an equal number of points on first possession - then it goes to sudden death and SF would have had a 2-for-1 situation - the next score wins the game and the Chiefs don't get a second possession to score

This is so overblown. Someone on the coaching staff must know that you don't want to get the ball first. Then just tell your dumbass players what the rules are.

Let the Chiefs get the ball first, tell your D they want to limit scoring as usual but that a TD isn't game over.
Then when you go on offense it's obvious what you need/want.

Some aspects of the NFL are genius, then sometimes they are just so fukking dumb. It was only 10 years ago they'd punt 20 yards on 4th and 1 from the opponent's 40.
