Tough to get viewership when you have a team like Notre Dame playing

Also inauguration
Love them or hate them (I always disliked ND dating back to the holier-than-thou Lou Holtz and Catholics vs Convicts era) the Irish seemed to always have a huge following.

For decades, pre-cable, they were always guaranteed to be one of the few games on TV every weekend. This led to generations after generation ND fans. Then “Rudy” gave them a resurgence with the younger generation.

And we know how rabid the Buckeye fans are, longing for their first title in a decade.

Surprised viewership wasn’t higher.

Maybe all but the truest fans were just burnt out with such a long season?

I wouldn’t think so. Who knows

ESPN keeps trying to tell us how great the playoffs were, but anyone watching knows better. Every first round game was a blow-out. In the second round, every lower seed won due to the poor format...there was one decent game. After that, they are competing with the NFL which no one can do. If they review the process critically, maybe they will figure out some changes, but that is doubtful as they are too busy counting their money...viewers or not.

Bad timing. After 4 high profile NFL games that weekend nobody was paying attention.

If they'd played Friday night it'd be all time ratings.
Thay have played all CFB Championship games since Jan 10th, 2011, on Monday.
So, comparing this year, to all the others on Monday seems fair. Or maybe you could guess at all of them, if played on a Friday. Then list from top to bottom. We already know, you have this year at all-time high.
I believe the all-time high right now is 2005 natty USC and Texas. Over 35 million.

Of course, your speculating may have already taken that into account.

More viewers, the more you can charge for ads. But they probably don't care anyway.

Ya it's just a week too late this year. I get the Monday deal w ESPN but it needs to be the Monday BEFORE divisional playoffs.

They were an after thought this year going up versus a slate of NBA/ NHL, a day off for kids and Trumps inauguration.

Also, purest CFB devotees didn't like the fact the 2 participants wouldn't have even qualified in years past. This brings into question the purpose of a conference champion game (too risky to play, if you lose you youre out) and whether or not ND should be forced to join a conference.

The championship game should be on ABC. What’s on ABC other than reruns on championship night. Let ESPN show the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and a ManningCast. Diehards watch ESPN and casuals will tune in to see Ohio State versus Notre Dame if they don’t have ESPN.
