College Football Bowl Pick for Saturday: Huskies Bark Past Broncos in LA Bowl
We are now 29-20 across All Sports with our write-ups after our NCAA Basketball loss on Wednesday. That includes going 15-10 in College Football and we have a play on Boise State vs. Washington in the Bucked Up LA Bowl Saturday.
Boise State vs. Washington Huskies
Saturday, December 14th – 8:00pm ET
The first FBS bowl game of the year, the Bucked Up LA Bowl on Saturday night, is also our favorite bet as of now in the opening week of this Bowl Season. We are giving the points with a Washington team playing at full strength when taking on Boise State.
Huskies Should Have Rushing Success
For starters, the Huskies had two potential key opt-outs on offense in running back Jonah Coleman and wide receiver Denzel Boston, and one on defense in cornerback Tacario Davis. The great news there though is coach Jedd Fisch expects everyone to play, especially since Washington has been off since November 29th, which allowed time for Davis to return from injury.
The Huskies went 8-4 against a tough Big Ten schedule while ranking 34th in the country in total offense at 414.5 yards per game with nice balance, ranking 54th in rushing offense and 40th in passing offense. We expect the running game to shine here though against a Boise State run defense that did not grade out well metrically.
The Broncos are rated 123rd in run defense per PFF while ranking in the Bottom 5 nationally in Rush Explosives Allowed, Tackling and Broken Tackles Allowed. The expected success of the run should also open things up for dual threat quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who passed for 2,850 yards with 21 touchdown passes vs. eight interceptions while also adding 595 rushing yards and six more touchdowns on the ground.
Add in a weaker defense than Washington typically faced in the Big Ten and we see them matching or exceeding their scoring average of 33.8 points, which ranked 19th in the land.
Quick Turnaround After Winning MWC
This was a relatively down year for Boise State, which sat at only 6-4 before winning the last three games. That includes winning the Mountain West Championship Game just last week, so unlike their counterparts from Washington, the Broncos have not had any extra time to heal any nagging injuries. Moreover, the Huskies represent a big leap in class for a Broncos team that faced an SOS rated 66th by PFF. Conversely, Washington faced an SOS rated 29th.
On the opt-out front, starting tackle Kage Casey has declared for the NFL Draft, and while there has been no final decision on him yet, we would be surprised if he goes. But even if he does play, Boise ranked just 110th in pass blocking per PFF, compared to 33rd in run blocking. That makes sense considering the Broncos ranked higher than Washington in raw rushing offense at 40th while lagging in passing offense at 67th.
But again, we refer to the easier schedule, and the raw ranking should take a hit if Casey opts out.
To be clear, we like Washington to win by double-digits here whether Casey plays or not, as he has nothing to go with the probable inability of the Boise State defense to stop the rushing attack. Add an extra week of rest and bet on Washington even as decided favorites in the LA Bowl.
Note that we bet on Washington -8 -112 when that line was available on Wednesday and posted that line on BookmakersReview Forum. For write-up purposes though, grading will be based on the line below.
THE PICK
Washington -9 -113 at Bookmaker
Remember that we already have at least one more play than this one here and could possibly be adding more before College Football Playoff games begin, so make sure to keep checking the NCAAF Picks thread for additions.
