Jones played in the NBA for 11 years before becoming an assistant coach — most memorably being the coach JR Smith threw a bowl of soup at — and a personal shooting coach for LeBron James after the two became friends while teammates in Cleveland.
It’s his relationship with LeBron that led to his arrest on Tuesday.
According to the indictment, on Feb. 9, 2023, before the Lakers-Bucks game, Jones allegedly texted an unnamed co-conspirator that a player would not be playing for the Lakers and that a bet should be placed on the Bucks. At the time, the player was not on the injury report.
LeBron James did not play in that game or the next game for the Lakers. LeBron is not named in the indictment, though he’s alluded to (h/t Mike Prada, Mike Vorkunov/The Athletic).

Before the Feb. 9, 2023 Lakers game against the Bucks, Jones texted an unnamed co-conspirator that a player was out and they should bet the Bucks. The player was not on the injury report yet. He also gave information on the 2023-24 Lakers, including Player 4, who the DOJ said was one of the Lakers’ best players that season.

It is not alleged that LeBron had any involvement with Jones in sitting out games. According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, LeBron was unaware of Jones sharing information.

A league source with knowledge of the situation told The Athletic that James was unaware that Jones shared information about his playing status.

Very well then, my opinion on the human race is pretty much 50/50. Half are evil & half are genuinely good people to my estimation. I hold no more hatred for one race or the other.
