Yesterday, I embarked on my quest to qualify for the NHC 2026, low-roller style.

For those that don’t know what the NHC is, it stands for National Horseplayer’s Championship. The season culminates in a final tournament in Las Vegas, March 2026, consisting of about 700 horseplayers. Grand prize usually falls in the $800k- $900k range.

The beauty of this contest is that you can only win your way in. No purchasing entries.

My gameplan going in is to build bankroll through “easier” low-roller tournaments, use that money to pay my $50 membership fee and to fund other contests. I plan on only playing the free or cheap NHC qualifiers, as well as cheap feeder tournaments.

I gave it a half-assed attempt in 2023-2024, but the closest I came was missing qualifying by .40c in one tournament.

A key component to my journey will be to drastically cut back on the amount of individual races I bet. And focus my bankroll on as many contests as possible.

Has not been my strong suit in the past.

One of my longtime friends has played in this for about 10 years. He said you have to learn how to wager for these as it is not how you play typically. So use year one as a learning experience from the wagering angle as much as anything. See what the successful players did in terms of ticket structure. Plenty of luck involved no doubt but I think there is more skill in the wagering structure than most people realize.
Best of luck sir.
