Not much in the way of details.

Reading between the lines... Since Umpires are allowed to gamble, except on baseball, that seems to indicate they either caught him gambling on baseball or working with an illegal bookie.

If he had gambled on baseball, they would have cut him loose immediately so it must be the latter.
