It's a Fed Holiday celebrating nothing more than a change in legal theory: the outlaw of people as private property.

This was already illegal in half the Union at the time the 13th ammendment passed.

In fact, the last State not in rebellion to have legal slavery was Delaware, a Union State.

As such, it should not be a Holiday. It holds no more significant part of history than does Prohibition (18th A) or Abortion (SCOTUS 1973).

It's a legal theory, and as cited above, they can be overturned.

I'm curious, btw, how many on the board are familiar w the history of the Country of Liberia & the American Colonization Society.

Had Lincoln not been killed, his administration would gave relocated nearly 5 million freed slaves back to Liberia...it was the US only African colony, and he shipped about 25,000 black back during his 4.5 years in office.

Funny...they don't teach this in school, but the US Democrat Party has always had a 'plan' of manipulation for the AA class, whether enslaved by force, by political alignment or cyclical urban poverty....You can fact check that back to the Founding thru Biden's Administration.

When Johnson (D) took over from Lincoln he stopped the re settlement, and took an incredibly lienent position on re admittance & re construction- which lead to basically 100 years of separate but equal.

Which, again, is another legal theory that the Country is slowly trending back towards now.

At a former company where I worked, to address these holidays they gave everyone 1 floating holiday that they could use to recognize any "special" holiday they wanted.

This was in addition to the standard days that have been around for decades.
New Years
Memorial Day
July 4th
Labor Day
T-Giving
X-mas

That way the company was not required to recognize any holiday that was race or specific religon related and everyone was treated fairly.

Best way maybe the feds could give everyone a floating holiday .

Juneteenth was created to appease a specific group of people. IMO it is not a good idea to have a holiday so specific to one group.

What happens when Mexican Americans demand Cinco de mayo be a national holiday????

What about Jewish people demanding Hannukkah as national holiday???

American Indians demaning June 25th (the day custer died) as national holiday???

Native American Day has been celebrated for many years now in some states. Some states celebrate that day in place of Columbus Day.

There are many States that honor the Native heritage, it is hypocrisy to have a Federal holiday for Natives given the US position on Native rights & treaty performance.

States can do whatever they want, we are talking about a FEDERAL holiday specific to a ideological change in law (13th ammendment) and as we will see in the coming days, laws change....i.e. making a holiday of a law is NOT bright idea.
