Largest contract offer in MLB history and he turns it down :+clueless

Where do you see him ending up?

The Washington Nationals are willing to listen to trade offers for Juan Soto after the star outfielder rejected their most recent long-term offer, according to a report in The Athletic.

The report says that Soto turned down a 15-year, $440 million offer that would have been the largest contract in baseball history.
Soto told ESPN earlier this year that he had declined a 13-year, $350 million offer prior to the offseason lockout. He is eligible to become a free agent after the 2024 season. The decision to listen to potential trades for Soto would represent a change of plans for the Nationals, after president of baseball operations and general manager Mike Rizzo said last month that the team would not move the 23-year-old star. "We are not trading Juan Soto," Rizzo told 106.7 The Fan on June 1. "We made it clear to his agent and to the player." But according to The Athletic, some Nationals officials no longer believe they will be able to reach any long-term deal with Soto. The expected return in a Soto trade would jump-start a Nationals rebuild.

They are 30-62 this season, sitting in last place in the National League East by 14½ games and on track for a third straight losing season after winning the World Series in 2019. Named an All-Star for the second straight season, Soto is hitting a career-low .247 in 2022 with 19 home runs and 42 RBIs in 89 games. He is also set to compete in Monday's Home Run Derby. The MLB trade deadline is Aug. 2.

If someone trades for Soto they will make sure they have him tied up in a long-term contract before executing the trade. They will have to give up a lot and without a long-term contract, Soto may only be with his new team through his current 2024 contract.

A team like SD or Philly would do this trade and forego the long term deal.

They have 20 months left to win it all.

If they do something like that, you can bet they won't be very good. They will have to give up a lot of talent to get Soto.

Maybe someone will make a blockbuster trade....
Like Philly giving up Schwarber+ or Harper for Soto.... just thinking about possibilities tha would not likely happen.

You never know, Pitt has a shitload of talent, maybe they grab Soto for 1 year and spend $$$ on a FA pitcher to try and catch lightening in a bottle
Yeah, but don't you think WAS will want 2-3 of their up-n-coming players in a trade. That'll hurt. Beside Pit is notorious for trading away all its talent and just being satisfied at the middle/bottom of the division. Been that way for about a decade.

Who knows.

$440m is a VERY limited market

Trade & sign is likely impossible. LA / NY just wait till FA

You think he'd take less to get on a contender?
That would suck for WAS.
No, right now Wash has very limited options.

They either find a mid teir contender willing to part w a legit MLB prospect for basically 1.5 years of service (think Milwaukee or SD or Philly maybe....Chi Sox maybe) or the get compensation in the draft when NY or LA signs him in 2 years.

They're in a no win situation, so if Pit wanted to offer up its entire 2027 plan, they would take it....but is Pit willing to offer up its 2024/2025 plan, idk
