I believe anyone would get caught after walking away with that amount of cash. I'm just saying.

How did he find it? He was on his way to the ATM to deposit money for his grandfather and spotted the bag.
Where did he get it from then? I thought it was ATM

Cops invited him to apply for an entry-level job when this happened back in the day

It’s not like he found this $$ out in some isolated place. I doubt he/anyone could have gotten away with taking the cash anyway. Banks and their perimeters laden with cameras

That's exactly what I was thinking. I was at the drive-thru at the bank one time and the lady ahead of me left shortly after taking her money but her account was still logged in when I pulled up. I could have withdrawn all her money but I knew there were cameras. The ATM timed out before I could do that.

No way in hell would I do anything like that near a bank with cameras.

Besides @quantumleap there's cameras everywhere in and around the way around the corners on people's doors everywhere. And that's it folks. It's a wrap

If you take it out of the ATM knowing it wasn't out of your account, it's the same as stealing someone's money
He simply picked up a lost bag of cash. The proximity to the ATM is irrelevant.

The idea of "getting away with it" is ridiculous. It's a matter of finders/ keepers.

Rule of law is pretty clear on that....keep your trap shut for 30 days & its yours.

This kid is stupid.

Stealing is how the law looks at it.

Why would you go to jail for finding money?

Do you go to jail if you pick up a quarter on the ground?

The kid is a fukking moron and will not last long in this world. Darwin always wins.
I respect you Minny. This is why..
Yes, if you find a bag of money at an ATM and keep it, you can be charged with theft, which could potentially lead to jail time. Keeping money that does not belong to you, especially a large sum, is not legally considered "finders keepers".
Here are the key factors that determine the potential legal consequences:
It is not legally lost property
When someone accidentally leaves money at an ATM, it is considered "mislaid property," not legally "lost". This is because the owner intended to complete their transaction and knows where they left the money. The ATM is also on bank property and most likely under constant video surveillance.
You may be charged with larceny or theft
Because the money is not yours to keep, taking it with the intent to permanently deprive the owner of it is considered theft or larceny. The severity of the charge depends on the amount of money in the bag:
  • Misdemeanor: A smaller amount of money, defined differently by each state, will result in a misdemeanor charge. Penalties can include fines and up to a year in jail.
  • Felony: A larger sum of money can lead to felony charges, resulting in stiffer fines and over a year in prison.
ATM footage can identify you
Banks use surveillance cameras to monitor all ATM activity. If you use your own card at the same ATM, the bank can easily match your transaction to the video footage of you taking the bag of money. Even if you don't use the ATM, the footage can still be used to identify you and trace your location.
What you should do
The legal and ethical course of action is to turn the money in to the bank or police.
  1. Turn it over: Take the bag of money immediately to the nearest bank branch or call the police to report it.
  2. Get a receipt: Ask for a detailed receipt from the bank or police listing the amount of cash and where you found it. This creates a record that you acted responsibly.
  3. Wait for the claim period: Many jurisdictions allow you to claim found property if the original owner does not come forward within a set period of time.

In the laws eyes it wasn't his to keep. He didn't earn it to keep it.

He was dead from the get go. Did they find that bag of cash?
Yes, the $135,000 bag of cash was claimed by its owner. The money, which was accidentally left next to an ATM in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was returned to the Wells Fargo subcontractor who was responsible for refilling the machine.
