Let me say that I'm all for cutting waste and fraud in government. I usually don't post anything political on here at BMR but seeing so many in support of what Elon is doing without understanding or caring about what DOGE is not doing. Digging in and actually finding the waste and fraud. Across the board cuts are lazy and will not fix anything. I'll be the first to cheer Elon on, when they start getting to the waste and fraud, without cutting the good things that are being done.
I have a rare disorder called Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension ( PAH) . The medication I take for it costs over $7,000 a month. I qualified for a grant to help me pay for the medicine. The medication I was on before this one, was $10,000 a month. If not for a grant, I could not afford this medication. It helps me have a higher quality of life and hopefully live longer. There is no cure for PAH. I found out I had this rare disease in Sept. 2017. It has a 70% mortality rate at 7 years after diagnosis. So, I'm one of the lucky ones that caught it early. There has been a lot of progress with this disease in the last 5 to 10 years. There are only 3000 people a year in the USA diagnosed with PAH making it very rare.
This post is not about me, it's about cuts to the NIH that the government is making. I don't know if grants like the one I was fortunate enough to get will be available for me and others in the future.
Research in all medical areas will suffer, with the cuts being made to the NIH. Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and all the rest.
UAB, one of the top hospitals in the country for heart disease stands to lose 10's if not 100's of million in research dollars. It is the largest employer in the state of Alabama. How far will it set back the research in all these areas where we need to find a cure. The big ones I listed above will suffer, and the rare ones, that don't affect many people, who knows what will happen.
I'm for cutting waste in the government as much as anyone, but the way to get at waste is not across the board cuts. They need to dig into it and find actual waste. Across the board cuts, is the lazy way, and cuts a lot, that the government does that's actually good.
I pray that all the ''I love what Elon is doing folks'' don't ever need the lifesaving research that will be set back decades.
