Wait a second, she's totally right here.

When you "hire a cab" they work for you and you are billed for the time. There is no arbitrary right to pray. If it were a native driver could he light up his ceremonial tobacco, no. Could an Indian bust out his stinky Currie? No.

I'd have feared for my life. That driver will be fired by Uber

I would love to know what the Uber company has to say about this.

That girl is paranoid. If she can't handle the Muslim prayer, then she must drive her own car.

Absolutely not. This is cabs are specifically governed by laws that include holding a medallion (license) and offical state or city issued badge. This, in other words, would be explicitly prohibited, by law, without the consent of the paying passenger.

I'd assume rideshare is covered under similar law

I just searched it. Looks like it happened last yr.

"Cases of passenger attacks against Muslim drivers

In October 2024, a New York woman was indicted on hate crime charges for pepper-spraying a Muslim Uber driver while he was praying during a ride in July 2024.

  • Uber's response: While no specific statement from Uber was found regarding the October 2024 indictment, the company's community guidelines have a zero-tolerance policy against discriminatory and harassing behavior. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. issued a statement confirming that the incident was bias-motivated.
  • Prior events: In 2019, an Uber driver in Orange County, CA, was harassed with anti-Muslim slurs by passengers. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) later represented the driver, who was initially fired by Uber after the incident.
Incidents involving anti-Muslim comments and bans

In November 2017, Uber banned conservative activist Laura Loomer after she posted anti-Muslim tweets following a terrorist attack in New York City.

  • Loomer's comments: After having trouble finding a ride, Loomer tweeted that she "couldn't find a non Muslim cab or @Uber @lyft driver for over 30 min" and called for the creation of a "non Islamic" ride-hailing app.
  • Uber's official comment: In response, an Uber spokesperson, Matt Kallman, stated, "Ms. Loomer was banned for violating our Community Guidelines". The company's guidelines explicitly prohibit discrimination based on religion. "

Yeah but what's the law regarding taxi/ passenger rights. With a licensed cab the driver certainly would be prohibited from doing this, much like a Islamic cashier can't stop mid checkout and pray or an Islamic electrician can't stop mid job and pray.

I'd be curious if Uber had an actual policy on religion. Can a Christian driver display a cross and bump Christian music? Can a Hindu play annoying sitar based songs?

There's more to this, it'll cone down to whether NYC governs rideshare as Taxi and whether Uber has a customer rights policy regarding region.

Aside from taxation this is why States AGs have been suing Uber to classify their drivers as employees and not 1099 ICs, holds them under a highly regulated and specific set of laws & sub laws
