Singapore is in a prime spot of real estate. Take a look at a map and you'll see it's positioned at the tip of the Malay peninsula which is the extension point of the route from the coast of East Asia to India and points west. If ships want to follow the shortest path, they have to go by Singapore.

If you see any picture of the water off the coast of Singapore you will see dozens and dozens of ships waiting in the sea. The reason for this is because Singapore has become a trading port. This small island makes its money from trade.
