Three suspects have been killed following a brazen ambush on the convoy of Shariff Aguak Mayor Akmad Ampatuan in Maguindanao del Sur, where attackers used a rocket-propelled grenade. The mayor escaped unharmed on 25 January thanks to his armoured Toyota Land Cruiser, but two security escorts suffered injuries.

This marks the third assassination attempt on Ampatuan since 2014, highlighting ongoing security issues in the southern Philippines. Authorities swiftly pursued the assailants, recovering weapons including the RPG launcher.

Details of the Attack​

The ambush occurred at around 6:30 a.m. in Barangay Poblacion, Shariff Aguak, as Ampatuan returned home from the local market in his black bulletproof vehicle. A white minivan approached the two-car convoy near the municipal hall, and two armed men disembarked. One fired an improvised rocket-propelled grenade directly at the mayor's Land Cruiser, causing smoke and damage but failing to halt it.

Last month's travel, I used Istanbul Airlines. Their airport is one of the quietest and clean airport I've been to.

I love that airport. I went through there on my trip to Ukraine in 2018. I got a really good deal on a Business Class flight so I got to use their Business Class lounge. The food was excellent!

I had a 7-hour layover so I went to see the Sultan Ahmet center and the Hagia Sophia. I would highly recommend.

Not just their own chef, their own waiting area with free food. It's encased in glass.

The Sultan Ahmet center and the Hagia Sophia are about 20 -30 minutes away by taxi. Beware of the taxi drivers there. Some are ripoffs.

| This week, Southeast Asia has seen two plane crashes, in Vietnam and Thailand.

| According to the Nation newspaper, a Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) AT-6TH light attack aircraft crashed on the morning of January 29th in Chiang Mai province, killing the two pilots on board. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident.

| According to Vietnam News: During flight, the Y130 aircraft experienced a malfunction and lost contact at 7:44 AM. Pilot Dinh Thanh Trung attempted to resolve the technical issue but was unsuccessful.

The pilot steered the aircraft away from residential areas. Once a safe location was found, the pilot deployed his parachute and escaped safely. He was then assisted by local residents and taken to the hospital.
