Indonesia Leads Southeast Asia in Military Strength, 2025
According to the latest Global Firepower (GFP) rankings for 2025, Indonesia emerges as the most powerful military force in Southeast Asia, placing 13th globally out of over 145 countries evaluated. The GFP ranking takes into account more than 60 factors, including the number of active military personnel, air and naval strength, defense budget, logistical readiness, and strategic geography.
Following Indonesia, Vietnam ranks second in the region at 23rd globally, leveraging its large ground forces and growing defense industry. Thailand comes close behind at 25th, while Singapore, despite its smaller size, punches above its weight in 29th place, thanks to its high-tech, well-funded military.
Myanmar and the Philippines take 37th and 41st places globally, respectively, with Malaysia just behind at 42nd—highlighting a relatively balanced middle tier of military capability within the region.
Further down the list, Cambodia ranks 95th, and Laos holds the 106th position, reflecting their smaller military footprints and limited defense resources.
This ranking underscores Indonesia’s strategic dominance in Southeast Asia’s military landscape while highlighting the diverse levels of defense capability across the region. As geopolitical tensions and modernization efforts continue, the military balance in Southeast Asia may further shift in the years ahead.
