Southeast Asia Faces Doctor Shortage: Indonesia and Cambodia at Critical Levels
A recent infographic highlighting the number of doctors per 1,000 residents in Southeast Asia reveals a significant disparity in healthcare access across the region. Data as of 2023 shows Singapore leading the pack with 2.46 doctors per 1,000 people, followed by Malaysia with 2.29 and Brunei with 1.61. These nations enjoy relatively robust healthcare systems compared to their neighbors.
However, a stark contrast emerges when examining the doctor-to-patient ratio in other Southeast Asian countries. Thailand, for instance, has less than half the number of doctors per 1,000 residents compared to Singapore, with a ratio of just 0.95. The situation worsens in Vietnam (0.83), the Philippines (0.77), Timor-Leste (0.76), and Myanmar (0.74).
The most alarming figures are for Indonesia (0.60), Laos (0.35), and Cambodia (0.19).

Quite a few doctors from SEA come to the US to practice for a whole lot more money.
A lot from India too that practice in smaller cities or rural areas.

That probably exacerbates the doctor shortage issue there.

India might be one of the worst countries in the world. Not one good thing about that country. @quantumleap

Tell me about it? 😜
Not sure where to start. Shitty country , culture , behavior , environment, I could wire a novel.
Flying domestically in the country is the most disturbing thing there is. People spitting on the floor, throwing trash on the ground on the plane. I hate that country with a passion.

Thank you. Over the years any books I've read or documentaries i have seen about India has given me a pretty sad view of this country so I never desired to visit there.

When I lived in Singapore for a few months I had an eye infection. It was very easy to get a doctor since they are a top-notch country when it comes to medical services.

When I was there I flew over to Thailand for a week vacation. I decided to check into medical services in case my eye infection flared up or something else happened and was surprised to find they have excellent medical care in that country so this chart is accurate for those 2 countries in my experience.

Yeah, I have a couple friends who now live in India. They lived here in Arizona and I used to work with her. They are both Brahmins which is the highest caste so they are used to good things and would take me to the best places.

However, I've seen travel documentaries about the place. A lot of people get sick over there. It's worse than Mexico. And like Fly says, the place is a shithole.

I like shitholes though but not India.
