I've lived in 6 different countries. United States is one of them. But Thailand is the best so far. And I haven't even been to Vietnam. Have to go there some day
Oh wow! You're indeed a traveler. You know who to contact if you decide to go to Vietnam. He knows it by heart and mind. ;)

This is a scene you see all over the country in the evening. Parents picking up their kids from an English center. Most all kids go to English centers to learn after school.
Is there a reason why they don't include English in their school curriculum?

They do, every single school teaches English every day. This is extra classes. Learning English is a huge business here. Thousands of English centers all over and parents pay a lot of money to send their kids to them.

Don't they hold a grudge against Americans for doing all that damage to their country? Even the older population?
No, there is no animosity at all. There is more focus on the war with the French to be honest. In my opinion that was the war they are the most proud of but of course they are proud of all their victories. Any country that comes here and messes with them, gets their ass handed to them.

Some people have a strange taste. Japan was ok; the only negative thing was the weird cough that some of the locals seem to have around foreigners. But Portugal number 2? Probably the crappiest place on the planet, at least the Madeira island is. And Turkey is not much better. But I think Turkey is more popular among women who go there either alone or with other women and leave their husbands at home
I was surprised about Portugal as well. I think most of the travelers visit Lisbon and the Algarve in the south which is quite nice. Other than the Algarve, I thought they had nice roads but the country was rather plain.

Turkey was unremarkable as well with the exception of the tourist places like Hagia Sophia and the Sultan Ahmed complex.

I've mentioned in this thread before that I don't care for Thailand because a lot of people don't speak English there and they are rather reserved. What is it you like about it?

I hang out and drink tea with a group of Viet Cong usually on Sunday's, very cool guys and I love bullshitting with them. They have no animosity at all, some even will wear some USA military gear at times. They always tell me USA #1, to this day, they even tell me they have no idea why America was even here. They had a conflict within Vietnam and then all the sudden they were told they are fighting Americans too. They laugh about it, but they are very proud people. They trip out that I can converse in Vietnamese with them.

Cheap cost of living and things work pretty well there. The fact that they don't speak english is sometimes frustrating but maybe it's even better that way. They want to keep their own culture and language and don't want their country to be westernized (at least too much)
