Not to get off point of this awesome thread but figured it would be worth a reply since you talked about this.
Take the time to watch Ken Burns 10-part documentary on The Vietnam War. Many of the vets on there talk about the same thing. How the strategy made no sense. Unlike other wars (ww1 and 2, etc) where we would have a goal of pushing the enemy back and fight to gain land and territory, in Vietnam they would fight to gain a hill near the Demilitarized Zone, for example, lose dozens of marines with hundreds injured over a 2-3 day span. Win the battle and take the hill. Only to leave it later that afternoon or the next day never to return again. Was demoralizing and didn’t make sense .
also soldiers many felt we were on the wrong side in the war. The south government was the one that was corrupt no matter who was in power. The north just wanted their independence.
