but really i never got why we cant have the redskins, but we got the chiefs, just does not make good sense

Exactly - has anyone ever heard a Native American called “redskin” ?

Like I said - it’s an outdated term with mild racist connotations - somewhere on the racist scale between negro and slant eye.

I have heard “Chief” used - and it can be taken different ways - from someone who is considered a friend it’s jokingly and with respect - from a stranger it can be taken as a sign of disrespect.

Reminds me of the time going through Pittsburgh with my grandfather years ago - he called anyone who appeared to be a day younger than him boy - didn’t matter what race they were. Anyone he pulls up in his giant old Chevelle and yells at a traffic cop - “ hey - boy, can you tell me how to get to the highway” - this black patrolman about 5’8 comes over and gets a real attitude. Says I am a Pittsburgh Police officer - you will address me as such” - my grandad pulls his 6’7 frame out of the car and says “Pardon me…so mother F’er - please tell me how I might find my way to the highway and out of this shithole of a city you have here” in his booming voice. Cop immediately politely gives him directions - grandad just mockingly says thank you - gives him the finger and drives off - leaving us all with a stunned silence.

No, nothing like that was said.

This whole thread is misleading.

Show me in the post where there is ever consideration into changing the name again.

It‘s not ever going to happen, name has already been changed and settled on. The organization already said that, and now the president is confirming that. Native American support for Redskins is not new and was there before the name change ever happened.

There is no “ongoing debate” like it says above.

Thread title seems misleading, as the article doesn’t site any plans.

Weird thread. It must be an opinion piece, lol.
From the original post......

The ongoing debate over the Washington Commanders' name has taken a dramatic turn with the Native American Guardians Association's (NAGA) lawsuit, reigniting discussions about possibly reverting to the "Redskins" moniker.

And what I'm saying is that this is nonsense. Nothing is reignited.

Thread title says president announces team name change plans.

Now read everything the president said in the original post about changing the name.

lol

The name change is over, the conversation is not ongoing like it says above.

I stand by my words. There is nothing new here. Plenty of groups both liked and disliked the name, from decades ago until right now today.

They spent 8 figures and a year and a half to come up with a name.

They are not doing that again and despite the thread title, there are no plans.

There is no more discussion about another name change despite any new lawsuits or what the author of the article ck pasted says.

Tossup for worst name in sports between Cleveland Guardians & Washington Commanders

Sounds like an Elementary school voted on the names

Guardians was a reach - remember the team was named IN HONOR of a former player who happened to be Native American.

The cartoon used was retired long ago (not the Chief Wahoo most people remember - the 60s version). That clearly wasn’t acceptable anymore - but the name. Non issue to most.

It’s just like the name “Devils” - you got Christian types getting all upset about it - so what - it’s a damn name.

👍🍺

Should’ve been the RedHAWKS - same everything, and nobody would’ve said $#!T…..
I'm not sure that the Natives have ever made a good decision in their existence/ co existence with white society nor am I sure that those who advocate on their behalf have been doing a very good job.

If "they'd" stayed silent, generations would be more knowledge of native culture and historic events simply by their projected imagery on currency, coins, in sports or town names, etc.

Instead, it gets washed away, forgotten, because some misguided clowns think it's 'insert phobia here'.

In 50 years nobody will be able to name the regional tribes that lived where they do. In 100 years nobody will recall treaties or the plight.
