He did Kentucky a favor by leaving. They were in the unenviable position of not being able to fire him because they gave him a stupid lifetime contract with an unbelieable buyout but now that buyout goes away and they can pursue the next head coach at Kentucky with no issues. It's a win win for both sides because Cal was on his way out at Kentucky and now they don't have to fire him.
Kentucky is FREE! Time to rebuild.

I konw it wasn't going well at Kentucky but I have to say its quite the "step-down" to head to Arkansas. If he wins there, a big if, and a blue blood school job opens, he's probably leaving really quick.
Actually Arkansas really isn't that big of a step down. He can win there with the money they have and he'll be able to get recruits to come there because that's what he does. It's a win for Arkansas but it's also a win for UK because they don't have to pay his buyout and can now use that money to get the next basketball coach. There are a lot of names being thrown about and I think they'll listen so Kentucky will get a pretty good replacement. Win win for both sides so I'm anxious to find out who Kentucky gets to replace Calapari because I think the program needs a shot in the arm.

Agreed, jrgum.

There is so much talent out there than can transfer and play right away now that taking a program to the next level can be done much quicker that before.

Arkansas should definitely benefit from this, at least as far as rosters go, and I agree Arky not all that far behind to make a quick improvement.

So Cal should be able to bring the talent, but we all know hius success rate even with top talent.

I think it's a matter of time before he brings asome Final Fours and a potential Championship to Arkansas.

Hopefully it's not just an assistant or an internal hire.

Surely they can dangle something sweet to get some talent for a coaching staff.

It won't be because there isn't one on Cal's staff that was ready to take over. This isn't like Duke that had a coach in waiting to replace Coach K or UNC who hired from within to replace Roy. Kentucky will hire a coach that is ready to handle the madness of the Kentucky fanbase and also that can navigate the portal and NIL. I'm not sure who they get but I don't think they will screw it up this time like they did when they got Billy Gillisipie. If Barnhart does then he won't be the AD anymore at Kentucky. His entire job rests on who he gets to replace Calipari at Kentucky because mens basketball is still King at UK.

Donovan likes the pros
He's in trouble in Chicago and he would be willing to listen to Kentucky because they can pay at least what an NBA job would be willing to pay him if he took another NBA job. It's a possibility he comes to Kentucky because I think he's intrigued by coaching at a place that will give him everything he needs to succeed in this new era of NIL and transfer portal.
