So never knew this was out there until listening to the Dave Cobb podcast and Dave mentioning Jason Isbell covering the song after hearing the demo Bruce did and how “stripped down” it was and so much darker and not the power ballad Bruce made it.

Personally I think JI did exactly what he does to songs / takes something simple and acts like he’s a genius adding strings and way too many overlays onto them thinking he’s the second coming of George Martin on a Beatles record. But Bruce’s demo really shows the song and what he originally meant it to be - a simpler ballad of a guy who came home from Viet Nam and felt abandoned by everyone.

Jim Croce was fukkin great.

He's from Philly.

He was a great - had a natural way of connecting with audiences and probably would have had a career in comedy too if he wanted it - kind in the same way Steve Martin is a comedian with a musical side.

Croce doing his “jive talking” thing and turning it into songs like Leroy Brown was just a natural extension of him in real life from those that knew him. He came up with the persona while serving in the National Guard. He learned quickly the easiest way to get out of work was make those above you laugh - so he’d be doing the “jive talk” imitating all of the black soldiers bitching about the Army. Officers were to entertained they’d keep asking him for more and putting him on cushy assignments in officers club or their offices so he’d always be around.

When I think of Croce - another guy who comes to mind immediately is Steve Williams.

Guy just had that natural ability to take a story he’d tell and make it into a song. Sadly - he passed way too young too (cancer).

Probably the biggest country music star you never heard of - he was close friends with John Prine before either ever came close to stardom. Prine in fact co-wrote this song with him but refused any credit (didn’t want to piss off country music fans - Steve gifted Prine a Wurlitzer jukebox that Prine kept in his office for his entire life along with his beloved billiards table).

Williams also wrote “City of New Orleans” that Willie Nelson made a huge hit.

Little bit of info . Randy California got his name while playing along with Jimi Hendrix. Two Randy's were in the group so he called this guy Randy California as he was from that state.
